    Our Best Mini Pumpkin Ideas

I happen to love decorating mini pumpkins during fall, so here are a ton of other ideas you can try too!

Decorating mini pumpkins is such a fun way to get into the fall spirit and create some really pretty fall decor. I love how versatile they are, and how they act as a blank slate for so many creative ideas.

I’ve cherry-picked our most popular mini pumpkin ideas from the last few years so that they’re all available in one spot for you to check out! Be sure to pin your favorites.

These lovely little mini pumpkins are really simple to make, and you just need two supplies.

I can’t recommend enough the Pentouch paint pens for this project. You’ll find links below to both copper and gold colored pens.

I love these particular paint pens for a few reasons. First, the coverage is beautiful and they don’t often leave a streaky finish.

Also, the metallic color has the perfect amount of shine (it doesn’t look brown or tarnished like lots of other paint pens).

Finally, they have a range of tips, from ultra fine to thick, so that you can really choose the right pen for the job.

    Tips For Using Paint Pens

Once you get the hang of it, they’re very easy to use! But there are a few tips and tricks that I’ve learned over the years that I’d love to share, so that you don’t have to learn by trial and error like I did.

    • When you use a paint pen for the first time, shake it vigorously with the cap on to mix the paint. Then, remove the cap, and hold the pen vertically over a piece of scratch paper. Depress the pen tip down a few times until you start to see ink flow into the tip. Allow the ink to fully saturate the tip. Now you’re ready to draw.
    • I recommend using a piece of scratch paper to test your pens before writing on your mini pumpkin. It’s nice to get the hang of how the paint flows.
    • Finally, I find that these pens work extremely well when you hold them somewhat vertically (as opposed to at an angle, as you may hold a regular pen). It helps keep the paint flow even, and not streaky or drippy.

How to Make Herringbone Mini Pumpkins

    Make Time: 10 Minutes

I’m pretty sure you are all smart enough to get the gist of how to make these buddies, but just to hear myself talk I’ll tell ya anyway.

    1. Start by tracing down each of the vertical pumpkin lines.
    2. Next, between two of the lines fill in the space with closely set diagonal lines. In the next space, repeat the diagonal lines at the opposite angle.
    3. Continue your way around the mini pumpkins until all of the space is filled in with the herringbone pattern.
    4. If you’re fancy, color the stem with the paint pens too! I think that’s maybe my favorite part.

Tips for creating Herringbone patterns with Paint Pens

I tried with a slim pen and also one with a heavier tip, so don’t be afraid to experiment! It’s a good idea to test out your pens first on a piece of scrap paper or the bottom of a pumpkin first.

Sometimes it helps just to get a feel for the pen and how it releases ink.

As you create your lines, do your best to keep them equidistant from each other. I created all of these lines freehand, which I encourage you to do. But just eyeball it and try to keep even spacing as you work your way around.

How to Display Your Mini Pumpkins

I love these mini pumpkins placed in a little bunch as a table centerpiece, or even up on your mantel!

I also think the pattern would look great on full sized white pumpkins, too — set ’em on your front porch and let everyone ooh and aah. xoxo

    Notes

If you're trying this DIY for the first time or are new to paint pens, use a few of these tips to make sure that your outcome is as successful as possible.

    • Always shake the pen first (I like to shake capped, with the cap side down) to mix the ink.
    • When you use a pen for the first time, depress the tip on a scrap of cardboard while holding the pen vertically. This helps the paint flood the tip and prepare it for drawing or writing.
    • I like to always practice whatever I'm drawing on a piece of scrap paper first to get a feel for how the ink is flowing.
    • Finally, I find that the paint pens flow the most evenly if you can hold them somewhat vertically as you write or draw. This helps avoid pooling or big drips of paint sneaking out.
