A fall garland is a quick and easy way to get your home decor ready for autumn! This easy tutorial comes together quickly and is a totally budget-friendly fall decoration idea. Read on for the how-to!

One thing I love to do when I’m making things for fall or Halloween is to put a new spin on a traditional fall color palette. I’m just not into the whole red-orange-yellow thing, no matter how much I love the colorful leaves that are headed our way.

So as I was planning this DIY fall garland decoration using these cute little mini pumpkins, I decided to stick with black and white, and some peaches and pale pinks thrown in for good measure. I love that it can kind of take you from summer into fall if you’re one of those people (like me) who is ready for pumpkin spice everything as soon as it’s September.

How to Display a Fall Garland

I love introducing small touches of decor throughout the house to welcome a new season. This fall garland would be the perfect toe in the water to add to your decorations toward the end of summer or beginning of fall.

I love to hang these types of garlands just about anywhere, but a few ideas for perfect hanging spots are:

  • over picture frames
  • on the mantel
  • on a bar cart
  • over a door entry
  • off of a door handle
  • over a mirror

There are so many fun little ways to incorporate your fall decor, so play with it and see where you like it best in your home!

Make a Fall Garland with Mini Pumpkins

Materials

Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus Drying Time)

  1. Start by covering the stems of your pumpkins with the gold paint pen. We used a medium tip and it provided quick and easy coverage.
  2. Decide on your color palette and start painting your pumpkins. You may have to add several coats to get the coverage you need. Our black pumpkins only took one coat but the pink and white ones needed three.
  3. Once all of the pumpkins have dried, add any patterns or embellishment that you like. We used a black paint pen to add a dash pattern on a few pumpkins.
  4. Start tying your pumpkins onto the thread or twine to create your fall garland. Leave a tail of at least 8 inches on one end of thread and then double knot the thread around the stem of the first pumpkin. We nestled the thread underneath the stem so that it hides.
  5. Keep adding pumpkins, being sure to keep them all equidistant from each other. Once you add all of your pumpkins, leave another 8 inch tail of thread on the opposite end of the garland.

  1. This is so cute! I’m such a sucker for garlands and banners, I think they’re such a cute and simple decoration. Plus, anything in “miniature” form instantly has my heart, too! ☺️
