One thing I love to do when I’m making things for fall or Halloween is to put a new spin on a traditional fall color palette. I’m just not into the whole red-orange-yellow thing, no matter how much I love the colorful leaves that are headed our way.

So as I was planning this DIY fall garland decoration using these cute little mini pumpkins, I decided to stick with black and white, and some peaches and pale pinks thrown in for good measure.

I love that it can kind of take you from summer into fall if you’re one of those people (like me) who is ready for pumpkin spice everything as soon as it’s September.

I’ve cherry-picked a few favorites that I think you’ll love, especially if you’re into this fall garland project. Check these out for more inspiration:

Supplies You’ll Need

The supplies for this autumn garland project are pretty simple! You may need to grab some of the mini pumpkins at a craft store or at the link below but otherwise I hope you find that you have most of the remaining materials in your stash already.

The paint pens listed below are some of my favorites; they provide great coverage for projects like this one. They also give off a beautiful gold sheen which adds a polished and pretty look to your final product.

Materials

Make a Fall Garland with Mini Pumpkins

Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus Drying Time)

  1. Start by covering the stems of your pumpkins with the gold paint pen. We used a medium tip and it provided quick and easy coverage.
  2. Decide on your color palette and start painting your pumpkins. You may have to add several coats to get the coverage you need. Our black pumpkins only took one coat but the pink and white ones needed three.
  3. Once all of the pumpkins have dried, add any patterns or embellishment that you like. We used a black paint pen to add a dash pattern on a few pumpkins.
  4. Start tying your pumpkins onto the thread or twine to create your fall garland. Leave a tail of at least 8 inches on one end of thread and then double knot the thread around the stem of the first pumpkin. We nestled the thread underneath the stem so that it hides.
  5. Keep adding pumpkins, being sure to keep them all equidistant from each other. Once you add all of your pumpkins, leave another 8 inch tail of thread on the opposite end of the garland.

Hang up your modern fall garland somewhere festive! It could also even look really great scattered down the center of a table on a table runner or as a centerpiece. So many ways to use it!

Turn it Into a Fall Garland with Lights

One final idea to spice up your project a bit — why not turn this into a fall garland with lights?

A simple battery powered pack of fairy lights would blend seamlessly with the mini pumpkin garland, and would add a pretty glow if you lit it up at night!

Just wind the strand of lights around the garland, or lay the garland over the lights to achieve a pretty, glowy look.

Have fun! And be sure to rate our DIY below if you give it a try. xoxo

  1. This is so cute! I’m such a sucker for garlands and banners, I think they’re such a cute and simple decoration. Plus, anything in “miniature” form instantly has my heart, too! ☺️

  2. It seems to me that a garland will be the ideal solution regardless of the season. Such details add coziness to your home and help create a special atmosphere. It is the sparkling lights that help adults and children create for themselves the atmosphere of a fairy tale and a New Year’s miracle.
