DIY Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt

Making a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt is such a fun and creative idea for celebrating your valentine! Learn how to create a quick and easy scavenger hunt using an instant camera.

Whatcha doing for your Valentine this year? I’m thinking it’s time to ditch the heart-shaped box of chocolates and do something a bit cooler.

I had the idea to put together a photo scavenger hunt downtown to send Ryan on a fun adventure, and to find his gift at the end. (That dude loves a challenge.) It’s so fun and so simple to put together!

Valentine Gift Ideas

Some people are just tricky to get gifts for on Valentine’s Day, am I right?

If you’re in a new relationship it can be tough to tell how big to go. Or if you’ve been in a relationship forever, it might feel a bit old hat.

But what I love about the Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt is that it’s fun for everybody! It could be a long term romantic relationship, a new sweetheart, or just your BFF, and they’ll all love this fun idea.

If you’re looking for other Valentine’s Day gift ideas, I took a second to compile a list of some other things I’ve gifted in the past. These are all total hits!

Be sure to pin your favorites so they’re easy to find again.

What To Have at the End of your Scavenger Hunt

Part of the fun of the Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt is the searching. But you’ve also got to have something that pays off at the end

I love the idea of putting yourself at the end, with some delicious treats to share or a sweet and simple gift. You could spread a blanket in the park, have your scavenger hunt lead your valentine to where you are, and be there with a great Valentine cocktail or delicious Valentine dessert.

You could also just lead your sweetheart to a great restaurant, the movie theater, putt putt golf, or any other fun date location!

Supplies For a Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt

I didn’t want to write a bunch of clues, so this actually became a visual scavenger hunt. It turned out to be so fun and it worked perfectly to have Ryan hunt down different locations in our city.

Instant Camera. I used my Instax camera to take a photo of the locations where I would leave clues. It was super easy and a fun way to put it to use.

Tape. The only other item you’ll need is tape to be able to tape your photos up at various locations.

Optional Items. I also used a balloon at each location, to help point Ryan in the right direction in case he missed the photo. You could also leave flowers, small gifts, or notes.

How to Make Your Scavenger Hunt

  1. To create your Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt, you’ll work backward. Start by setting up your final gift or location (bring a friend to guard it if you think it needs to be kept safe). Use the camera to take a photo of the location and make sure it’s recognizable to your valentine.
  2. Take that photo to another location and tape it up. You can add a balloon by every photo to help locate the photos if you think that would help.
  3. Once you tape up your photo and balloon, take another photo of this location.
  4. Now take this photo and move to another location, taping it up and adding a balloon.
  5. Keep going until you have about 3-5 locations.
  6. Then give your Valentine the photo of the first location to lead them all the way to the end and to their gift!

Here’s a fun video I made of creating our scavenger hunt!

Scavenger Hunt Keepsakes

After your subject finishes the scavenger hunt, you can even keep the photos as keepsakes! Take some more fun photos of yourselves and each other at the end of the hunt and add them all to a book like this one as part of their Valentine’s Day gift.

Hope you love this fun and creative Valentine’s Day gift idea! If you try it, be sure to comment and let me know how it turned out. xoxo

  1. This is SO cute. Fun fact: I tried to do a scavenger hunt with my husband once and one of his clues was too well hidden so I got a phone call that went something like “CAN YOU JUST TELL ME WHERE IT IS PEOPLE ARE STARING” lololol
