Valentine Balloon Messages

I teamed up with my husband to make this little dream of mine come true and it was a complete blast to run around, bombing downtown with balloon love.

We met so many fun people who were wondering what we were doing, and it was so fun to see people come up and take photos under the balloons we left! I’m still on cloud nine.

If you want a super-fast, super-simple, but high impact way to tell your Valentine you love ’em, create some of these Valentine balloon messages!

The Best Foil Balloons for Valentine Messages

Not all balloons are created equal. For this project, I recommend the 16″ foil mylar alphabet balloons.

They come in a variety of metallic shades — rose gold would be pretty for a Valentine balloon message! But you can choose your favorite.

I also recommend balloons that have the tab on the upper end of the balloons for hanging, and that you inspect all of the tabs for rips or tears. You don’t want any of your balloons to rip or fall off.

Where to place Your Balloon Messages

Keep in mind as you place your Valentine balloon messages around, that you want to put them in a place where they’re somewhat protected from the elements.

Wind will definitely carry the balloons away if they’re not secured well. Be sure that you tie or tape them up securely.

They work perfectly indoors. If you place them outside, look for a spot that has some sort of coverage or protection from the wind, rain, or sun.

What You’ll Need to Create a Valentine Balloon Message

  • Gold alphabet balloons – I like the 16″ balloons, but the larger size (40″ like these) would be fun for a short message.
  • Balloon pump – A hand pump is all you’ll need if you don’t plan on using it too often.
  • Cotton twine – You could use baker’s twine, or a thicker twine for longer messages. Make sure it’s strong enough to hold all of your balloons.
  • Scissors
  • Duct tape – This will be used to secure your messages to any surfaces where you cannot use the twine to tie a knot. Always test the surface first to make sure the duct tape won’t damage it.
  • Optional: packing tape and a hole punch. These can be used to strengthen and reinforce the hanging tabs on your balloons.

Reinforcing Your Balloons

If the hanging tabs on your balloons are ripped or torn, you want to make sure to reinforce them so that your balloons don’t rip off. There’s an easy fix for this!

Take a small piece of packing tape and fold it over the entire tab of the balloon, making sure the tab is flat. Fold the packing tape back on itself to secure.

Then simply punch a hole where the original hole was. Now you have a reinforced tab for hanging!

How to Hang your Valentine Balloons

  1. Decide on the phrase that you’d like to spell out. The sky’s the limit, but keep in mind that short phrases will be easier to manage while you’re hanging them up.
  2. Inflate all of your balloons using the balloon pump. I also like to tape back the little inflation flap on each balloon so that the letters look nice and clean. To do this, just make sure you’re looking at the front of the letter, then fold the flap around to the back and secure with clear tape.
  3. String the letters onto your twine. Be sure that each letter is facing front as you string them on, and that you don’t accidentally spell your words backwards! Each letter has two holes at the top for stringing. I like to always come through the back to the front on the first hole, then the front to the back on the second hole. If you keep a continuous pattern, your letters will lay nice and flat after you hang them up.
  4. Hang them somewhere! If you can find a fence or some sort of post to tie the ends to, go ahead and to that. Otherwise, tape either end with duct tape to secure your balloon love note Valentines.
