A time-honored tradition in our family? Sitting down to absolutely demolish each other in an unreasonably competitive round of Mario Kart.

Super Easy Group Halloween Costume

One of the reasons I loved this family Halloween costume was that unlike some of our other past group costumes, the Mario Kart costumes were a light lift and very easy to put together.

I also love Halloween costumes that use items from your closet, or real-life clothing pieces that you’ll use again. There’s no reason to bust a budget for a costume you’ll wear once.

And finally, the best costumes are comfortable and easy to wear while kids are running around trick-or-treating.

These costumes check all those boxes!

More Group Halloween Costumes

We have years’ worth of family Halloween costumes and group costume ideas! It’s one of our favorite family traditions.

We’ve got ideas and tutorials for everything from an easy Where’s Waldo costume to a very unique In-N-Out costume. Here are a few more!

Mario Kart Characters

Obviously, the four characters we chose aren’t only from Mario Kart. They’re classic characters from lots of different Mario games.

But the beauty of Mario Kart is that all of your favorite characters are gathered in one place! So if you have a larger group or family, you have lots of characters to choose from.

We chose Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach.

Easy Donkey Kong Costume

Ryan and Maggie as DK and Peach were a great combo because of their size difference.

For an easy Donkey Kong Halloween costume, use a base of brown pants and a brown t-shirt or long sleeve shirt.

The key to making it recognizably Donkey Kong is a red neck tie with the DK symbol on the end.

We thrifted a red tie and added the DK symbol by cutting it out of felt and hot glueing it on the tie.

Princess Peach Halloween Costume

Maggie’s costume required the most DIY attention, and by “the most,” I mean I think it took me about half an hour.

Start with a base dress in a pink shade that somewhat resembles Peach’s dress.

Then use hot glue to glue on a blue gem on the chest.

We created a crown by glueing a piece of a glitter foam sheet in a small circle on top of a blank headband. Cut the top of the foam to have a crown shape.

Next, glue on gems around the crown. Add white gloves and ballet flats.

Mario and Luigi Costumes

These were the easiest! Henry and I each wore overalls that we owned, and a red and green shirt from our closets.

I did purchase this bundle of Mario and Luigi hats, gloves, and mustaches from Amazon. These were the only items that had stumped me on the DIY front and it was worth the purchase.

Adding Mario Kart Elements to Your Halloween Costume

If you want to make the costume feel more like Mario Kart and not just standard Mario characters, think about adding some fun elements!

Here’s a super cute way to add a car to the costume. You can also add other little details, like giving each character a trick-or-treat bucket decorated as a mushroom, star, or Bullet Bill.

Have fun! xoxo
