This leather checkbook holder is incredibly easy to make and so beautiful! You can create it in just a few minutes, and have a chic place to house your checkbook.

I had the most embarrassing mess of a checkbook cover floating around in my purse for literal years before I finally decided to DIY this leather checkbook holder.

No kidding, I think it was the very first plastic checkbook cover that the bank gave me when I got my checking account in high school.

It was brittle and cracked and finally, it split into two pieces. So DIY to the rescue!

How Hard is it to Make?

This is the perfect project to try if you’re new to sewing!

And no, I’m not just saying that. I’ve come across so many tutorials on the web that claim to be easy-sew or good for beginners and actually are quite complicated.

This one literally has you sewing four straight lines, and thats it.

You can make this leather checkbook holder in less than 15 minutes.

Using Other Materials for a DIY Checkbook

I used leather for this project but you can use all kinds of materials! Faux leather would be a great option. Here are a few other ideas:

Microfiber material
Cork (this would be super cool!)
Duck cloth
Waxed canvas or cotton

Basically any material that has a bit of thickness and weight to it would be great! Just make sure it will hold your checks together, and that your sewing machine can puncture two layers of the material.

Leather or other
Sewing machine and notions

Pen

How to Make a DIY Leather Checkbook Holder

Start by measuring your checks. Most check packs are the same size, but in case yours are cut slightly differently, I recommend using your own measurements.
Cut a piece of leather or faux leather. You’ll want to cut it so that it’s 1/2 an inch wider than your checks, and about four times the height of your checks, plus one inch.
Measure the halfway point of the height of your piece of leather, then measure away from that 1 1/2″ in either direction. Make a small mark with your pen at the edge of your leather on the wrong side at these two points. These are the points to which you will fold in the top and bottom of the leather to create pockets for your checks and register.
Thread your sewing machine with your thread and bobbin color of choice. Set the machine to a straight stitch.
Fold one end of the leather piece inward to the pen mark (1 1/2″ away from center). Sew a straight stitch up the edge of the fold to this point, leaving 1/8″ seam allowance.
Do the same on the other edge of this side of the checkbook.
Repeat the process on the other side of the checkbook, folding it in to the other marked point and sewing both edges.
Trim any threads and put your checks and register into the leather checkbook holder.
