How to Make Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • cake cones
  • your favorite cake mix or recipe
  • frosting
  • sprinkles in your favorite color palette, or themed to the next holiday!

Instructions

  1. Start by mixing up your cake batter. We used good ol’ box mix, but you can use pretty much any mix or recipe that you like to create ice cream cone cupcakes.
  2. Place your cake cones on a baking sheet. Now here’s the secret! You can’t fill these babies up anywhere near the top. They’ll overflow and essentially melt the top of the cake cones off. I recommend filling them about two thirds of the way full, and the cake will rise to just above the top. If you’re hesitant or worried about filling them too full, do a test run. Try filling just a few cones at different heights and bake them to see how your oven does.
  3. Once you’ve got all the cones filled, bake according to the box instructions (usually around 18-20 minutes at 350).
  4. Decorate! Once the cupcakes have cooled, frost the tops and let your kiddos go to town. One great way to do it is to give them sprinkles in a certain color palette or theme and let them do the decorating. Then you have a pulled-together look but they feel like they had all of the creative vision. 😉

How to Serve Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes

If you have an ice cream cone tray, perfect! You can pop the ice cream cone cupcakes into the individual holes and set them out on the dessert table.

If not, there are a few options. If your cones can stand on their own, these look super cute on a cake stand or a tiered tray. For cones that may have uneven bottoms, you can usually use a knife to saw off any uneven parts on the bottom and help them stand up.

And for a more sturdy method of serving the ice cream cone cupcakes, use a plain cardboard box and cut a series of cone-sized holes in the top so that you can rest the cones in the holes. Easy in a pinch!

These were a total hit! We’ll definitely be doing them again for holidays and birthdays.

  1. My mom made these when I was a kid. I used to make these to bring to school for all 3 of my kids’ birthday treats and now they are all in college. I topped mine with a maraschino cherries and all the kids loved them. They are easy to serve but a little trickier to transport. The recipe for cupcake cones is usually found on the box of cones. They actually make special racks that you can bake and serve them in now. https://www.amazon.com/Betty-Crocker-Cream-Cupcake-Baking/dp/B007L75HGC/ref=sr_1_3?crid=D8BMNJPKO0AS&keywords=cupcake+cones+baking+rack&qid=1561137867&s=home-garden&sprefix=cupcake+cones+%2Cgarden%2C152&sr=1-3.
