Activities to Do with Kids on the Fourth of July

I always find Independence Day activities for kids a little tricky, because it’s one of those holidays where all of the excitement comes during the later part of the day. So our kids are usually antsy during the early part of the day for the festivities to get started.

These printable tattoos are one great way to pass the time and keep your kids occupied. Let them help print, cut, and apply the tattoos to stretch out the activity.

How to Make Printable Fourth of July Tattoos

Materials

Make Time: 10 Minutes

  1. Start by downloading our printable! Our Fourth of July Tattoos file has five different tattoo designs, repeated six times. So one sheet will give you 30 tattoos. Note that the file is mirrored so that when you print it onto the tattoo paper, the letters will look backward. But when you apply the tattoos to the skin, they’ll be correct.
  2. Put your printable tattoo paper into your printer, being sure that you place it so that the ink will print onto the glossy side. We recommend printing on a high quality setting for the best tattoo quality.
  3. Open up the Printable Fourth of July Tattoos file and print!
  4. Be sure not to touch the ink when the tattoos come out of the printer; it may be tacky or wet for a while. Apply the clear sheet over the printed tattoos. The best way we’ve found is to just remove one end of the backing on the clear paper, then align that end onto the printed sheet. Peel away the rest of the backing as you roll the clear sheet onto the printed tattoo sheet.
  5. Once you have your clear protective sheet on, rub vigorously over each tattoo to make sure the clear sheet is fully adhered.
  6. Once you’re ready to use the tattoos, trim closely around the edges of each one. Peel away the clear sheet and place a tattoo ink-side-down on the skin. Get a washcloth or paper towel wet and place the damp cloth over the tattoo paper. Hold there for a 30 count, then lift the cloth and remove the paper.

How to Remove Your Printable Fourth of July Tattoos

I just love these! This particular tattoo paper stays on really well but also removes easily with a little olive oil and a soft cloth. (We’ve also been known just to scrub them off of the kids in the bathtub.)

Other alternatives to olive oil could be a lemon essential oil, or even a little bit of hair conditioner.

I find that if you allow the tattoos to soak in a thin layer of oil or conditioner for a minute or so, they’ll wipe off with a soft, damp cloth.

All in all, it’s a great Independence Day activity for kids and a fun way to add to your celebrations. Don’t hesitate to sport some of the temporary tattoos on yourself, too! They’re definitely for everybody.
