Here’s how easy it is to create a statement wall in just about any room in your home! Try a diagonally painted accent wall to add a pop of color. Read on for the simple tutorial.

When our second child was on the way, we decided to move our first into his own space. So Henry moved one door down in our little hallway and we made a plan to create his own colorful space.

When we moved we wanted to take his famous closet doors with him (Ryan spent way too long on those babies to just give them up). We wanted to paint an accent wall in his new room, too, and thought it might be fun to do a little take on the diagonal closet stripes.

So we dove in and figured out how to create a diagonally painted accent wall.

How to Choose a Paint Color for an Accent Wall

When you’re choosing a paint color for an accent wall, consider a few things.

Firstly, what is the feel you want to create in your space? Deep and comforting? Bright and cheery? Warm or cool? Consider the vibe you’re trying to produce as you look for shades of paint.

Secondly, consider the light in your space. Natural light can have a strong effect on the way that paint colors appear on a wall. It’s often smart to paint a swatch on a portion of the wall and look at it during different times of day to make sure that you like it in all lights.

For this project, we naturally gravitated toward Tame Teal from Sherwin Williams. It’s somewhere between mint and sky blue, and it’s a strong pop of color without overwhelming the somewhat small room.

Supplies You’ll Need

• Your favorite interior paint. We used HGTV HOME^TM by Sherwin-Williams Tame Teal (HGSW1317), Showcase Interior Paint, eggshell finish
• Purdy® ClearCut™ Elite™ Glide™ Brush (for cutting in)
• Purdy Golden Eagle™ Roller on the Revolution Frame
• Painters tape
• Dropcloth
• Painters tray

How to Create a Diagonal Painted Accent Wall

Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus Drying Time)

1. Start by taping off your diagonal line. Be sure the tape doesn’t arch at all as you’re adhering it to the wall. Smooth down the edges of the tape so that no paint will seep underneath. Cover the floor with a drop cloth.
2. Grab your Purdy brush and start cutting in edges. The angled brush was crucial for this part — it was nice and sharp and made clean lines so that we didn’t need to mask the edges at all.
3. Once you’ve cut in all of your corners and edges, grab your Purdy Revolution Roller. Load with paint and start painting in the large open areas of the wall. I like to paint in a “W” pattern when using a roller so that the edges of the paint blend into each other. The roller holds more paint than average, which helped lots in moving the project along quickly.
4. Cover your whole wall with paint and allow the first coat to dry. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to complete your coverage.
5. Carefully remove your painter’s tape.

How Has the Painted Accent Wall Held Up?

Ta-daaaaa! I love this wall. Makes me wish I had had the courage to paint a diagonal accent wall a long time ago!

The paint went on like a dream, and we only had to use two coats for complete coverage, thanks to the Paint & Primer in One feature.

And the big question is, how has the paint lasted? Here’s a photo of the room as it is now, 6 years after we originally painted it:
