DIY Gold Leaf Art

DIY Gold Leaf Art

For the last 6 or 8 months, there has been this massive canvas hanging in our bedroom. For a while it was completely blank, just hanging there. Then I did this project on it, which I loved, but didn’t quite fit with the vibe of our bedroom. So I finally decided to paint right over it and start with a clean slate. I’m a gal who knows what she likes, so I decided to get all gold leaf on you again. Mr. Lovely and I decided to make a little DIY gold leaf puppy, because we realllly want a dog right now but it’s not quite time yet for us to get one. So at least we have this little golden guy on our walls.

Make Time: 2 Hours

Decide on the image that you’d like to create out of gold leaf. Draw or print out the image; if it’s overly large you may have to piece a few pages together with tape. (The dog took about 6 sheets of scratch paper.) Set the image onto the canvas and trace lightly around it with pencil.

Brush the gold leaf adhesive onto the traced image. I was sure to get adhesive over the lines I had drawn just slightly, in order to cover up the pencil marks. Brush adhesive onto the entire outline of the image and fill in the image with adhesive as well. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the directions on the packaging. I always find that a thin coat does the trick; don’t leave any puddles or you’ll have a mess.

Once the adhesive is slightly dry and very tacky, apply the gold leaf. Most gold leaf comes with a sheet of waxy paper attached to it. Apply the sheet gold side down and rub firmly but gently on the spots where it is making contact with the adhesive. Peel back the wax sheet carefully and the gold should adhere. You will probably need to patch a few spots here and there. Just use a partial sheet of gold leaf over the places that need patching in the same manner.

When your shape is covered in gold, use a clean, dry, soft brush to buff away the excess gold leaf. It should come right off. (Beware this step. Those little gold flakes can find their way all over your house with the slightest gust of air!)

That’s it! Hang your new art and enjoy. I just wish I could get better photos of this guy! Our bedroom is a nightmare to shoot in. But you get the idea. Our little golden puppy found a happy home. xoxo

Any chance you’d be able to tell me the maker/where you got your rug? Thanks!

    • chelsea on said:

Hi Megan! Wish I could be more help, but unfortunately there are no labels or tags on the rug to distinguish where it might be from! We found it at a TJ Maxx in Studio City a couple of years back and snapped it up. There are some similar ones that I found recently on, though, if you want to do a search there! xo

  26. With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or
copyright violation? My website has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself
or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any
ways to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
