What’s In My (Diaper) Bag

What's In My Diaper Bag

Moms have it hard, ya’ll. Somewhere along the way the world decided that we are the ones who should be lugging around everybody’s stuff, and so the diaper bag was born. When we only had Henry, I was able to get away with a purse and just carried a few essentials for him. But now that there’s two kiddos, and one is still a baby, I’m rocking a bigger backpack-style bag with everybody’s everything. But here’s the deal — sometimes mom needs to carry her own stuff too! I’ve downsized just as much as I can, but there are still a few things that I always need with me while we’re running around. So here’s what you’ll find in my bag on any given day.

Diapers and Wipes Duh. I try to function with just one diaper for each kid, and then keep more in the car. I also always have regular wipes and then a small package of antibacterial wipes meant for faces and hands. (Our kids get irritated skin if we use regular wipes on their faces.)

Other Kid Essentials For Maggie, a little toy that she can chew on. For Henry, one of his “guys.” (Somewhere along the line he started calling his little cars “guys.”) Also, I don’t carry extra clothes any more but I do carry empty baggies in case we need to bag up a diaper or wet clothes. I always have a nursing scarf with me too — so Maggie and I can cover up and eat anywhere. It’s also served as a blanket, a towel, and a sunshade. That thing is a workhorse.

Snacks and Water There was this one day that I had been running around with the kids and I was at the library with them for a story hour. All of a sudden I broke into a cold sweat and got super lightheaded, and I realized I hadn’t eaten that morning. No snacks in my bag either. A friendly mom gave me something to eat, but since then I always carry snacks for myself. Lately it’s been the Special K Nourish Chewy Nut Bars (the caramel almond sea salt flavor is woah good). They’re small and easy to toss in your bag, and the perfect snack to keep you going. They’ve got actual real, visible ingredients, too — nuts and oats and all that good stuff. Keeping a bar on me all the time helps me keep track of my own wellbeing and really own it. It’s easy as a mom to forget all that while you’re taking care of everyone else!

Mom Stuff Other essentials! A pair of cheapo sunnies, because they’re always getting pulled on by the kids. A lip moisturizer (and a lip color stick for when I’m feeling fancy). All of that and a couple of spare bandaids stay in a little pouch that wrangles the smaller stuff. Wallet, keys, phone. And that’s it!

Sometimes I wonder what I carried in my bag before I was a mom — or maybe it’s just that I was able to carry around teeny tiny clutch purses and fit all my own essentials right in there. Either way, I’m happy to be rocking that big ol’ bag these days, filled with everybody’s everything, and always trying to remember to take a second and fill it with a couple of things that are just for me. 😉 xoxo
