When I was a kid, any time I had a cold, my Portuguese grandmother would prescribe a saroop.

This is an old-school Portuguese concoction that’s basically a hot toddy. Warm water, lemon, and honey. And if you were older or if she was feeling particularly bold, grandma would pour in a splash of bourbon.

She swore by it for the common cold, and if you give it a quick search you’ll also find that lots of people use a hot toddy as an at-home cold remedy.

But today’s recipe brings a modern holiday twist to this age-old (and already delicious) cocktail.

I love to play mixologist, especially around the holidays.

There are so many lovely holiday flavors to play with, and adding spices or fun garnishes to a cocktail is a festive way to celebrate the winter months.

Whether it’s a simple mulled wine or a minty blended drink, it’s just fun to sip and cheers with friends.

Making a Hot Toddy for a Cold or Cough

Now, whether or not you believe my grandma’s advice, it seems like lots of folks on the internet have the same idea.

Hot toddies have long been known as an at-home way to fight a cold.

I’m no doctor so I wouldn’t be so bold as to prescribe that for you.

But I do know that warm water and honey can soothe a sore throat, the vitamin C in citrus is good for the immune system, and a shot of bourbon will definitely relax you enough to hopefully catch some z’s.

Cold remedy? You be the judge.

Spiced Cider Hot Toddy Ingredients

This hot toddy recipe, though, is a little different.

Our Spiced Cider Hot Toddy has a little extra holiday cheer to bring some delicious flavors into the mix. Here’s what you’ll need.

Spices. You can choose your favorite holiday spices! We used cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, and whole allspice.

Citrus. A traditional hot toddy uses lemon. To accentuate the spices, I recommend orange for this recipe.

Bourbon. If you prefer whiskey, you can also use that. For this recipe, I used Bulleit Bourbon.

Apple Cider. I prefer unfiltered cider if you can find it — the apple taste is much more fresh.

Honey. This is optional, depending on the sweetness of your cider.

How to Make a Spiced Cider Hot Toddy

Ingredients

  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp whole cloves
  • 1 tsp whole allspice
  • 3-4 star anise
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 4 cups apple cider
  • Bourbon
  1. In a saucepan, combine apple cider and all of your spices. Heat slowly, stirring occasionally, until it comes to a simmer. Turn off the heat (you don’t want to let it boil.)
  2. While the cider is heating, pour 1-2 ounces of bourbon into a mug.
  3. Once the cider is heated, strain away all of the spices and return the cider to the pot.
  4. Ladle cider over the bourbon into the mug, filling to the top.
  5. Add a garnish of a cinnamon stick, star anise, or orange slice.

How to Store Hot Toddies

Once your cider is heated, let it come to room temperature. You can store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.

To serve again, simply pour the cider back into a saucepan and heat slowly, turning off the heat before it boils.
