One of my great joys is decorating our family spaces for Christmas. The feeling of being at home together during the holidays is one of my favorite things.

And when were together in our living room, surrounded by cozy garlands, Christmas DIYs of years past, and ornaments that we’ve collected over the years, I feel especially grateful.

Here’s a rundown of how I dress up our family room to make it feel festive.

Should You Decorate on a Theme for Christmas?

First and foremost, I feel like it’s important to say that I think whatever you love is what you should do in your home. Whether that means color, minimalism, vintage, or some outlandish theme.

It’s your home and the most important thing is that it makes you feel happy.

Over the years, my Christmas decor style has varied, especially in the living room, as we went from a couple with no kids to now a family with a couple of young tweens.

These days, I’ve settled on a vibe that’s fairly traditional with modern and whimsical touches, and it feels just right for now. And I can guarantee you it will continue to shift!

Adding Sentimental Pieces to Your Christmas Living Room Decor

For me, holiday decor is the most enjoyable when it holds meaning or sentimental value. I’m not one to bulk buy at a big box store and toss it up for the holidays.

Adding one or two special ornaments every year, or even making your own decor, is more my style.

You can start heading in this direction, too, if this resonates! I love this winter checkers set as a starter DIY because it serves both as decor and as a game to bring people together. We play it many times each year.

Our hand-painted Christmas village is another great example. Over the years, we’ve each painted different homes and added them to the village.

I even have some little mini houses that the kids painted when they were babies.

Add Layers and Texture with Simple Pieces

This living room Christmas decor idea is so simple but easy to forget!

If you want to make your space feel close, cozy, and warm, you can rely on just a few simple items to bring in that feel.

Garlands are a maximum impact addition, and if you get some good ones you can reuse them year after year.

Adding fairy lights to the garlands brings in a warm glow.

I also love supporting local fundraisers by buying poinsettias and scattering them all over the house. It’s such an easy and lovely way to get a classic Christmas feel.

Finally, bring out all of your extra throw blankets and pillows to add cozy texture.
