Setting a holiday table brings a particular feeling of coziness and singularity to your Christmas decor.

I’m not big on table settings during any other season of the year, but during the holidays I find that it makes meals and gatherings feel extra special.

Maybe your holiday meals take place at a tiny table for two (like mine did for many years in NYC), or maybe they are gathered around a table that can fit a dozen loved ones.

But no matter the size, here are some of my favorite Christmas table setting ideas.

Simple Decor Ideas for a Kitchen Bar at Christmas

If you have a small space like a bar top, utilize functional pieces that are also super festive!

You can keep a tray of sweets out to nibble on, placed next to a cozy candle for ambiance.

I also love to keep a tray out with some spoons and my favorite holiday mugs, ready to be filled with tea. They’re functional and make great decor with lots of personality.

Outdoor Dining Table Settings for the Holidays

Dining outdoors during the holidays might only be a California thing, but I love it!

An outdoor Christmas table setting is a great place to use fresh greenery to decorate the table.

An evergreen branch down the center of the table is high impact but low effort. It looks beautiful and can last for days!

Place a few candlesticks among the greens to make it feel a bit elevated.

If your goal is a formal setting, pull out the good dishes — it’s so fun to use formal pieces in an outdoor setting for a feel that’s a little fanciful.

Cozy Christmas Table Settings for an Eat-In Kitchen

Maybe your holiday table is in the kitchen and your goal is something a little more low-key?

Mix and match linens with classic patterns like stripes and plaid. I also love using children’s Christmas dishes during December – they make me smile and they make my kids happy.

Last year I created this mini gingerbread village centerpiece out of graham crackers! It was one of our favorite projects to make together and it lasted all month long.

Fun Formal Table Settings for a Christmas Table

If your indoor dining table is a more formal affair, don’t be afraid to incorporate small touches that will still make it feel fun and unique.

At this 10-person table, we used mismatched glassware and dishes. This brought a majorly festive feeling while not sacrificing the formality.

You can also add something surprising or interactive to delight your guests and yourselves! Leave a Christmas cracker at each place setting, or create a conversation card for each guest.

Bringing something with personality, to get lively conversation and create unique memories, might just be the best part of creating a Christmas table setting. xoxo
