DIY coasters emoji craft

I’m kind of obsessed with emoji, so it was only a matter of time until I brought some off my phone and into my house. We put this project together with Valentine’s Day in mind, but let’s be honest, these guys would make a fun gift any time of the year!

Before you dive in, be sure to check out our other DIY resin coasters, and this fun post on how to make bookmarks. They’re both easy projects with a majorly cool payoff!

More DIY Coaster Blanks for This Project

We used cork coaster blanks for our DIY coasters, but you could create this emoji craft on other materials too! Check out the list below if you’d rather use something other than cork.

Best Craft Supplies for DIY Emoji Coasters

See below for a list of our supplies! Each item is linked for your convenience.

Blank Cork Coasters – These are 1/8″ thick, which is a nice weight for a coaster. If you want your cork a little thicker, you can search for your desired size.

Acrylic Paint – You’ll only need a few colors, depending on which emojis you plan on painting.

Paintbrushes – This pack of paintbrushes has a nice selection of size and type of brushes.

Paper – Regular copy paper will do the trick!

ScissorsYou could also use a craft knife and a cutting mat if you find that easier.

Lacquer – I like this spray version because it goes on in a nice even layer.

Optional: Cricut Machine – See the section below for my thoughts on this!

Cutting Tools: Scissors vs. Cricut

The instructions below describe how best to create the DIY coasters using scissors. But to speed up the process, you can also create this emoji craft using a cutting machine like the Cricut.

I always try to share alternate instructions in case a reader doesn’t have a Cricut machine. That being said, I can’t recommend the Cricut strongly enough if you’re a regular crafter.

It’s my most-used tool by a long shot, and it has saved me hours and hours of cutting.

It also creates clean, beautiful cuts and makes your projects look professionally finished. Always feel free to shoot me a question in the comments section if you’d like to know more!

How to Create This Emoji Craft

  1. Start by making a template for your favorite emoji faces. I don’t have a printer, so I traced the coasters and sketched the faces by hand…but you could make this part way easier on yourself by simply printing the emoji faces. Make sure to size them to the size of your coasters.
  2. Next, paint the coasters yellow, including the edges. While you’re waiting for the paint to dry, cut out your emoji templates. This is the part that takes the longest, but it’s worth taking the time to do it right. Plus, once you have the template made you could crank out a whole bunch of these coasters to give away!
  3. Once your templates are done and the yellow paint is dry, place each template over a coaster and paint in the details.
  4. Wait for all the paint to dry, then give your coasters a coat of varnish. This will give them a shiny, finished look, and protect the acrylic paint from coming up with water.

Once the varnish has dried, your coasters are ready to use! For Valentine’s Day, I think it would be fun to tie a set of these together with a card that reads, “I’ve got heart eyes for you.” Or maybe you could deliver breakfast in bed, and under the mug of coffee would be a coaster with the kissy face emoji! Cute, right? I might just do it…

  9. hi , i had painted the coasters after drying they stick to each other, unable to understand why?could u help me

    1. Hi there! My best guess is that they needed more time to cure. Lots of times paint and/or ModPodge will feel dry to the touch but when stacked with something else they’re still tacky. I’d give them a good few days to cure before using. Thanks!
