DIY Brass and Suede Geometric Garland

I have officially decided that mini brass tubes are my new favorite DIY material of choice. Whyyyyy do they look so cooooool?! I can’t take it. I had to whip up this little DIY brass and suede geometric garland and now it hangs in my office and therefore my office cool factor is up by a good two hundred percent. I love how it combines the look of bunting with a modern garland. And the way that the brass and suede textures and finishes play together is just so perfect! So. Let’s make one already.

DIY Brass and Suede Geometric Garland

Materials

• brass tubes
• jewelry wire
• suede cord
• tubing cutter
• optional: wire cutters or pliers

Step 1: Cut the brass tubes into 2-inch sections using the mini tubing cutter. Place the tube into the groove in the cutter, tighten the wheel until the blade is taut against the tube, and twist the tube until the blade gets loose. Tighten and twist until the tubing is cut. This process can take some time; I also found that sometimes once a substantial groove was formed on the brass tube that you could just take it out of the tube cutter and bend it back and forth until it broke on the groove. I would be careful with this, though, as you don’t want the tube to snap at the wrong spot, or bend unnecessarily. If you create a thick groove but don’t want to keep twisting, you could also just grab some wire cutters and see if they’ll cut through. Just don’t pinch the opening of the tube closed.

Step 2: Cut a 40-inch length of wire. String on three sections of tube. Bend the wire so that the three sections create a triangle. Re-insert the wire through the first tube and pull taut, creating a triangle out of the three brass pieces.

Step 3: Repeat step 2 on the same wire to create more triangles. If you run out of wire, cut another section and twist the two pieces of wire to extend the length.

Step 4: Keep stringing on brass tubes and creating triangles until you’re happy with the length. When you reach the end of the garland, wrap the end of the wire around itself to secure the last triangles on either end. Snip the end of the wire.

Step 5: Cut a length of suede cord. Loop it around the end triangle and back through itself. Knot the ends of the cord together. Do the same with another length of cord on the other end of the garland.

Step 6: Hang up your garland and be awesome!

Isn’t that pretty? I just love finding new supplies and materials. And I feel like you could really stretch your creative muscles with those pretty brass tubes. You could use them for jewelry making, home decor, gardening projects, and so much more. In fact, you could just make a mini version of this brass and suede geometric garland and wear it as a necklace and it could be pretty cool. The possibilities are totally endless. Have fun! xoxo
