Singing Christmas carols is something that’s special to me in a way I can’t explain. Throughout high school, I was in a choir that caroled throughout our community every December. Then, when I became a teacher, I taught that same choir and I took more students to spread Christmas carols throughout our local area.

When I left that teaching job, I took a small handful of sentimental items to remember it by, and one of those items was the Christmas caroling book that we used. And now, one of my favorite carols lives on our wall as Christmas art.

Psst – if you love the holidays as much as I do, I think you’d really like these:

Creating Oversized Christmas Art

No, I didn’t just rip a page out of the book and frame it (just saying that makes me cringe!). I have been wanting for years to find a Christmas art idea for our mantel, so I had an oversized copy made of one of the pages of the book, and mounted it on canvas! It fits perfectly on the mantel and I love the reminder of the joy of the Christmas season.

Something important to note: the whole Christmas art project cost about $15 total. So it’s budget friendly too!

How to Make Easy Christmas Art on a Canvas

Materials

Make Time: 30 Minutes

  1. Start with your piece of sheet music. If you don’t have music, do an online search for your favorite song! Download the file or scan the music that you own.
  2. You’ll need to take or email the file to your local print shop and ask to print it in an oversized format. Have them size it so that the file prints at 19” tall.
  3. Trim the page once printed so that it’s 13” wide.
  4. Paint a layer of ModPodge on your canvas, covering the surface. Carefully lay down the printed music so that it aligns with the canvas.
  5. Paint another layer of ModPodge over the music to make sure it’s smooth and sealed. Allow your Christmas art to dry.

Take Your Holiday ARt to the next Level with a DIY FAux Frame

If you like your Christmas art as it is, mounted on the canvas, then you can just let it dry thoroughly and then use it in your Christmas decor! But if you want to take it to the next level, you can try this technique we learned from our friend Brittni at Paper & Stitch.

She shared a similar technique on her Instagram stories and you can check that out here.

We altered the technique slightly, just cutting the corners of the wood at a 45 degree angle and then nailing the wood directly into the side of the canvas with a nail gun.

How to Display Your New Christmas ARt

I made this piece with the specific intention of displaying it on our mantel, along with lots of varying sizes of bottlebrush trees. I love how it looks! If your mantel is lower than ours, you could even make your Christmas art a little larger with a bigger canvas.

If you don’t have a mantel or don’t like that idea, there are tons of other ways that you could display your art!

  • on a bar cart
  • leaning on the top of a dresser
  • hanging on the wall
  • leaning on top of the kitchen counter
  • hanging on the front of a bookshelf

I’d love to know if you make this one, and which music you use! Leave a comment here or tag me on social media to share your own creation. xoxo
