Have I ever mentioned that I married a genius mixologist? You can find evidence here, here, and here — and now we’ve got a new one to add to the bunch! We concocted this Cara Cara Orange Cocktail Mixer and as it turns out, it makes an insanely good Old Fashioned (or a Manhattan, for that matter!). The Cara Cara oranges are sweet and tangy and add a fun twist to the classic. And I liked the mixer so much we made a pretty label that you can download, print, and put on a bottle in case you want to gift a batch to another cocktail lover. It makes a pretty cool handmade gift for Valentine’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, or a host gift at any party. Let’s do it!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Cara Cara orange juice
  • 3/4 cup sugar

Materials

Step 1: Juice your fresh Cara Cara oranges until you have 1 1/2 cups of fresh juice. Strain out any pulp or seeds.

Step 2: Combine juice and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Lower heat and continue to simmer for 10-20 minutes, or until the mixture becomes thick and syrupy. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Allow the syrup to cool for a few minutes until it’s warm but not hot. Fill one of the glass bottles halfway full of the syrup, and fill the remainder of the bottle with fresh water. Cap the bottle and shake/swirl until the syrup fully dissolves in the water.

Step 4: Download and print the bottle label. Cut around the border of the label, peel away the backing, and adhere to the bottle. Write the date of the batch on the bottle. Mixture will last two weeks if refrigerated.

Cara Cara Orange Old Fashioned Cocktail

Now let’s talk drinks! I personally love a Manhattan. I know the bourbon can be a little much for some people but I just think it’s such a great cocktail for sipping, especially during the colder months. And the Cara Cara orange mixer makes an Old Fashioned that’s fast, easy, and pretty much impossible to get wrong. It’s also a special twist on the classic that would be a great signature cocktail at a party or dinner. Here’s our recipe!

Ingredients

  • bourbon (our favorite is Bulleit)
  • Cara Cara Orange Cocktail Mixer
  • optional: orange bitters
  • Cara Cara orange slice for garnish

For this cocktail, use a 1:3 ratio of mixer to bourbon. We used one ounce of mixer and three ounces of bourbon. If you like it like that, you’re done! You can either shake it with ice and pour it in a coupe, or over rocks in a rocks glass. (No ice if you like it neat!) If you feel like it’s missing a little something, I recommend making our Orange Bitters recipe and adding a dash to the mixture. Cut a thin slice of Cara Cara orange and place it on the surface of the cocktail as a garnish.

One bottle of our mixer will make about 8 cocktails, so mix up a batch of the syrup and have a party! Cheers! xoxo
