The Essential Things I Carry In My Bag When I'm Momming

The things that I carry around with me have definitely changed over the years. In New York, it was a Metro Card and blister blocker. In LA, it was ten different colors of lip gloss. And now, it’s usually my wallet and a whole bunch of stuff to keep our family happy, healthy, and ready to go. Even those items that I carry around for Henry and Maggie have drastically changed over the past few years, though, as they’ve moved from infancy to babyhood and now into toddlerhood and beyond. (I definitely don’t miss the days of carrying around bottles and changes of clothes for unexpected blowouts!) I feel like we’ve developed the perfect traveling tool kit for our family, so I thought I’d share the the essential things I carry in my bag when I’m momming those two little ones.

Staying Healthy

I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to give up carrying wipes with me. They used to be for diaper changes but these days they’re for everything from wiping hands and faces to cleaning dirty tables or seats if we’re out somewhere. They’re also pretty good at getting stains out of clothing when your kids accidentally spill ketchup on your for the 37th time. Next up: bandaids. Especially in the summer when little limbs are exposed, we tend to have scrapes and cuts so I keep a couple cute ones on me at all times. I also always carry hand sanitizer and use it any time we leave a public place where the kids are touching lots of things (playgrounds, libraries, etc.). I know that it’s no substitute for washing hands but it’s a small step that we take to keep them as healthy as possible. With their asthma issues being virally induced, I take any precaution that I can when it comes to nixing germs.

Snack Attacks

We love to be on the go a lot (in case you haven’t noticed 😉 ),so I take great care to always bring snacks with us from home for three main reasons. First, I’m particular about our kids’ nutrition and teaching them to make healthy choices. Second, it’s just more affordable to pack it than buy it any time we’re out and about. And finally, if I have snacks in my purse I can avoid a hangry meltdown at a moment’s notice, rather than having to hunt down food. I know we’ve been talking lots lately about our love affair with Stonyfield, and it’s honestly one of the snacks we bring with us most often. They have so many easy, grab-and-go options so the kids never get bored of it. For a long time we were all about the pouches but these days the kids are really into the snack packs. It’s their favorite yogurt combined with little cookies for dipping, I mean how does that get any better?!

So I usually toss two snack packs in my bag (sometimes three if I know I’ll need a snack too!) and then a piece of fresh fruit to share. It’s so easy, so fast, and I know we’re feeding them awesome nutrition that they love. I love that it’s also organic and non-GMO, made without the use of toxic persistent pesticides (so it’s also good for the planet). The kids have taken to choosing two different flavors and then trading cookies. It’s insanely cute. You can find snack packs at the store nearest you right here.

Non-Screen Entertainment

We have loved exposing the kids to lots of different experiences, and one of those is sitting down at a restaurant to eat. It’s something I wanted them to be familiar with, and we have tried to help them develop patience and enjoyment for it. I don’t love to hand the kids a screen to entertain them (although I admit there have been a couple times we did out of necessity), so I always keep some entertaining items in my bag. My kids’ absolute favorite? Imagine Ink. They’re these little coloring books that come with a single pen and when you swipe the pen on the page, a hidden picture appears in a rainbow of colors. It entertains them for at least half an hour, which is long enough to wait for a meal. I also always have a small notepad, stickers, and a fun pen for them to scribble with. They’re small things that don’t take up too much space but have saved us countless times.

That’s it, my tool kit! I’ll tell ya, I always feel like supermom when someone in my family needs something and BAM I can pull it out at a moment’s notice. What’s in your bag that you always carry, mom or not? What are your favorite snacks to carry around? Any other essentials? I’d love to know! xoxo
