When my sister and I were little, my mom always had something crafty around for us to do. I still love going through my family’s old Christmas ornaments, finding all of the macaroni and pipe cleaner ornaments that she helped us make. So nothing is more near to my heart around the holidays than to make things with my littles. Truly, to see their little faces light up when they finish a project and proudly display it just melts me. We recently spent the afternoon together making these pom pom Christmas ornaments, and they were so tickled by how they turned out! It was such a special day.

We were inspired by our friends at Signature by Levi Strauss & Co. ™ to share one of our very favorite holiday traditions, and naturally I thought of crafting with my family. I run around in the Signature jeans all the time (anybody who knows me knows that I basically live in jeans), and the Modern Slim Cuff in Lizzy wash is so comfy for a cozy afternoon at home. (Although I’ll show ya later how I dress them up, too!) It’s not often that I find a jean that’s cute and comfortable enough for mom life, but these definitely fit the bill. I really love feeling comfortable and confident in what I’m wearing when I’m with the kids. It’s important to me to be able to be active with them, get down on the floor with them, and play in whatever ways come up. These days with little kids are so fleeting, and if there’s anything I want them to remember about their childhood it’s that mom and dad were there alongside them, playing and having fun — and not being self-conscious about what they’re wearing. So when I find something that lets me forget about all of that, I’m so grateful to incorporate it into my everyday uniform.

So! I got all the materials set up for the kiddos and we got our craft on. Henry was so excited to help choose the decorations for each ornament, and Maggie was just loving rolling around in the pom poms. Here’s how to make them, if you’d like to start your own holiday craft tradition!

Materials

  • yarn
  • pom pom maker
  • scissors
  • cardstock
  • tiny pom poms
  • low temp glue gun

Step 1: Make all of your pom poms using the pom pom maker. (Here’s a simple breakdown if you have never used one!) Tie a long loop on each pom pom to use as a hanger.

Step 2: Cut various shapes to decorate each pom pom out of the cardstock. We decided on three shapes: antlers, an elf hat, and a scarf. If you’re cutting with kids, you can draw the shapes and have them cut along your lines.

Step 3: Place a dot of low temp hot glue (low temp is way safer for little kids!) down in the pom pom where you’d like to glue on your cardstock shapes. Press the cardboard into the glue (another good job for the kids!) until the glue cools. Glue a tiny pom pom onto the front of each large pom pom to look like a nose.

Decorate your tree! We let the kids put these on for us and of course they all ended up on the very bottom of the tree. So cute! I can’t wait to share more traditions with the kiddos this year. We’re taking them both to the local performing arts center to see Maggie’s first musical this Christmas! I’ll probably actually wear the Signature jeans there, too, and dress them up a little. I’m thinking some velvet heels and a jeweled sweater would look super festive and still be comfy. Although I did love hanging out at home with them and one of my standard button-up shirts. Perfect for crafting, snuggling up on the couch with some library books, and just about anything. You just can’t go wrong with great denim!

Do you have a favorite tradition with your family around the holidays? There’s just something that’s so heartwarming to come back to the same things year after year, knowing that your family or friends for years before you have done the same. It feels good to be a part of that, and I’m so grateful to be giving some of those traditions to our kids. Leave us a comment and let us know one of your most favorite traditions! xoxo
