Using Vintage Toys to Create a DIY Christmas Wreath
So let’s talk about how to make this DIY Christmas wreath! I had a vision of a little vintage car driving through a snowy scene, piled high with presents and melting snow.
I found the vintage Fiat car online, but I think this would be so charming with a car that was one of your kids’ toys, or even yours from your childhood!
It could also look lovely with a small train or a toy truck. Be creative and see if you can incorporate a toy that’s special to your family in some way! It would add that much more nostalgia to the project.
Materials for a DIY CHristmas Wreath
Materials
- brass or gold hoop
- sisal trees in a variety of sizes
- toy car (We used a vintage Fiat but it would look cute with your favorite car!)
- flocked faux tree branch (Find in the floral section of your local craft store.)
- True Snow
- fine iridescent glitter
- small paint brush
- mini presents
- floral wire
- glue gun
- scissors
- ribbon
- optional: printer and printer paper
Make Time: 1 Hour
How to Build Your Wreath
- Start by cutting your faux tree branch into small sections and wiring them onto your gold hoop. The goal is to create a firm surface for the car and trees to rest on. Cut a small length of wire and wrap it firmly around the branch and the hoop until it’s secure. Keep adding pieces.
- Next, prep the mini presents and trees. Arrange them all in a stack that will fit on the top of your car, using your glue gun to glue the pieces together one by one. Then glue them to the top of your car.
- Next, replace the front license plate of your car with a fun holiday greeting. We used “MERRY,” but you can customize this however you like! Create a file with white words on a black background (you can do this in a word editor, Photoshop, or even Canva). Print it in a tiny size that will fit over the existing license plate and glue it on the front of the car.
- Cut some wire to start wiring your car onto the wreath. Slip the wires around the car wheels. Then set the car on the faux branches of the wreath, weave the wires through the branches, and twist the wires together underneath.
- Next, add trees. Start toward the back with taller trees, and use floral wire to wire them to the wreath. Next, work your way forward on the wreath with smaller trees. I found that it was easier to affix the smaller trees with hot glue, either to other trees or to the faux branches.
- Now, add some True Snow to your car and trees! Use a small paintbrush to apply snow to the tips of the trees, some of the presents, and even the car if you would like. Apply it anywhere that snow would gather. While it’s still wet, sprinkle with a little iridescent glitter to make it shimmer. Allow all the pieces to dry thoroughly.
- Tie a ribbon around the hoop at the top of the wreath to use as a hanger.

Displaying your DIY CHristmas Wreath
I loved making this project, and I love how it turned out! It’s perfect for a vintage Christmas vibe, a car lover, or any space that could use a little whimsy. I also love that it’s double-sided, and looks great from the back too.
The way that it’s constructed, it can either hang or set on a surface. If you set it on a surface, just re-tie the ribbon so that it remains at the top in a nice shape.
Now tell me — what kind of car would you choose? xoxo

DIY Christmas Wreath with Vintage Toy Cars
This DIY Christmas Wreath with vintage car toys is so charming! Perfect for home decor, gifts, and more.
Materials
- brass or gold hoop
- sisal trees in a variety of sizes
- toy car (We used a vintage Fiat but it would look cute with your favorite car!)

- True Snow

- mini presents
- floral wire

Instructions
- Start by cutting your faux tree branch into small sections and wiring them onto your gold hoop. The goal is to create a firm surface for the car and trees to rest on. Cut a small length of wire and wrap it firmly around the branch and the hoop until it's secure. Keep adding pieces until you are satisfied with the arrangement.
- Next, prep the mini presents to go on top of your car. Choose a small sisal tree if you would also like one of those. Arrange them all in a stack that will fit on the top of your car, using your glue gun to glue the pieces together one by one. Then glue them to the top of your car.
- Next, if you would like, replace the front license plate of your car with a fun holiday greeting. We used "MERRY," but you can customize this however you like! Create a file that's white words on a black background (you can do this in a word editor, Photoshop, or even Canva). Print it in a tiny size that will fit over the existing license plate and glue it on the front of the car.
- Cut a few lengths of wire to start wiring your car onto the wreath. Slip the wires through the underside of your car anywhere that they'll hold -- around the wheels is a good place. Then set the car on the faux branches of the wreath, weave the wires through the branches, and twist the wires together underneath to affix the car.
- Next, add trees to either side of the car. Start toward the back with taller trees, and use floral wire to wire them to the wreath. Next, work your way forward on the wreath with smaller trees. I found that it was easier to affix the smaller trees with hot glue, either to other trees or to the faux branches.
- Now add some True Snow to your car and trees! Use a small paintbrush to apply snow to the tips of the trees, some of the presents, and even the car if you would like. Apply it anywhere that snow would gather. While it's still wet, sprinkle with a little iridescent glitter to make it shimmer. Allow all the pieces to dry thoroughly.
- Tie a ribbon around the hoop at the top of the wreath to use as a hanger.

I love how this project turned out. Super cute!
I was wondering where you got the different colored trees like the lime green one
Hi Diane! I’ve collected the trees over the years — I believe those came from the dollar aisle at Target a few years ago.
That little car wreath is so heartwarming. Love the view from the back, too.
So, so very cute! Pinning 🙂
Wish this was a kit!
