How to Make a Patterned Peplum Baby Shirt
My favorite place for kids’ basics has been June & January, from day one. I’ve been dressing Henry in their pieces since he was born, and now Maggie wears the all the time as well (some of her J&J are actually Henry’s hand-me-downs!). They’re almost indestructible and the colors are so fun, not to mention they’re great for DIY projects! So here’s how to make a patterned peplum baby shirt using one of June & January’s solid peplum tanks.
You know how sometimes you find something that works well for your wardrobe so you buy it in three colors? This is like that, but for baby clothes, and in the entire rainbow. And no, this post isn’t sponsored — I just really stand behind everything that June & January makes! We toss the tank shorties on after swim lessons, we layer the jumpers with a denim jacket, and Henry likes to show of his muscles in their racer tank tops. 😉 I find that the material is stretchy enough to make the sizes last for a really long time, even if your kids are growing. And they’re easy to get stains out of too. I always tell other moms that the pieces run a couple of dollars more than what you’ll find at Target (or wherever) but they last for so long. Anyway! That’s all just a little mom wisdom in case you’re looking for some new duds. But let’s get to the real point here!

How to Make a Patterned Peplum Baby Shirt
Materials
- peplum shirt
- iron on gold foil
- Cricut machine
- iron
Make Time: 45 Minutes
Step 1: Decide on a shape for your pattern. We used a little swan but you could do anything! I also thought that some summery shapes could be cute — pineapples, sunglasses, palm trees. Be creative!
Step 2: Upload or create your image in the software for your cutting machine. Note that when you’re ironing on the images they’ll flip, so mirror them if they’re letters or numbers. Copy and paste the image multiple times so that you have enough pieces of the shape to create a pattern on the shirt. Use the cutting machine to cut out the images.
Step 3: Weed away the excess foil. Snip apart the pieces of the pattern and place them, foil side down, onto the fabric. Arrange them so that they’re spread evenly in an arrangement that you like.
Step 4: Use a hot iron to press firmly down on each piece of the pattern for 20 seconds. Flip the shirt inside out and press firmly down on each piece of the pattern for another 10 seconds. Allow the clear foil backing to cool completely before removing it. Peel away the backing slowly to reveal your pattern.
