Ten Things: Siblings

siblings

My sister just had a perfect little baby boy a few weeks ago, and right now her days are spent getting used to being a mother of two. I’m sure there’s no way I could begin to understand the ways that her life has been turned on its ear these days, but I figured the least I could do was a salute to having a sibling here on Ten Things. Having a sister is awesome (particularly my sister, thank you very much), and here’s why I think so.

1. Someone else understands what it’s like to be our parents’ child.
2. She gave me maybe the best gift someone can give another person – a niece and a nephew.
3. Sometimes we find old stickers that we used to trade when we were little. It’s like going on an archaeological dig of our lives.
4. She always texts me first when she drinks too much wine and it’s hilarious.
5. We’re polar opposites but that means that she can help me with the stuff I’m bad at, and vice versa.
6. When I visit I don’t have to pack a hair dryer or any toiletries.
7. She remembers things from when I was too little to remember.
8. She’s always up for a frozen yogurt run.
9. If you can make her laugh you know you said something really funny.
10. She taught me to tie my shoes.

When we were little, my sister and I fought like cats and dogs, and I remember feeling like her main mission in life was to torture me with her friends. Ha! She probably thought the same thing about me. Do you have a sibling? I’d love to know why you love having one! Have a great weekend. xoxo

  1. I have a half sister. Since she’s seven years younger than me and didn’t grew up in the same house as me, it’s not quite the same like having someone around all the time. She’s 17 years old now, I think that in the next few years we will get closer though and I’m really looking forward to it.

I love your ten things concerning your sister. 🙂

  2. This list is so sweet! My sister is 4 years younger than me, but we’ve always been super close. We love reminiscing now on our funny games as kids. And it’s nice to have a friend who knows you so intimately like a sister. Being together is always so comfortable.

  3. I have a younger brother and I’m lucky to also have him as one of my best friends. I can relate to parts of your list. Mine would include him giving me my first/only black eye (he was only 7 too), we are still obsessed with dinosaurs and quoting movies, and we both have the same laugh as our dad. 🙂 Great post!

  4. Sisters are AMAZING. They start out as the bane of your existence. And then you grow up and all your friends get married and have kids and you never hear from them again. And your sister also gets married and has kids…but she still makes time for you. And then you’re wondering how in the world that obnoxious little brat became your best friend? Love it.

  5. That’s so sweet! I have two sisters who I love very dearly and share many memories with, so I love to hear about other people who love their siblings too!

  6. I too thought my sisters are there to make life miserable when I was younger. But, as we got older, we are the closest as we have ever been. I think it was growing up.

I can’t think of a world without my sisters. They are my instant best friends!

  7. I love this, especially # 1 and # 4. I love my siblings so much, it was the reason we decided to have a second kid after our first came very expectantly. I didn’t want her to grow up alone.

  8. Awww this was so sweet! My sister is 4 years older than me and when we were little we would fight SO much! She was “too cool” to be seen with me and I thought she was weird and dramatic (and I would steal her clothes so that didn’t help). Once she moved away for university we became best friends though and now we’re even closer. Funny how that works out lol

  9. Siblings are the best. 🙂
I have 7, 5 who I grew up with. We’re pretty close, it’s awesome being able to be silly together and use references others wouldn’t get.
Also, it’s nice to be able to talk through writing or planning problems with people who know what I’m talking about.
