Ten Things // Quotes

sara-eshakArt by Sara Eshak!
I’m all fired up over here. I have plans and dreams and schemes and the fire underneath me to make them happen. I don’t know about you, but words greatly inspire me. I’ve been collecting quotes since I can remember. Sometimes a certain sequence of words just is so beautiful, or succinct, or true, that it hits me right in the gut and inspires action. Isn’t that incredible? I always wonder what it must be like to be a person who is responsible for a legendary quote. There’s lots of responsibility in that, don’t you think?

In any case, I was trolling my own Pinterest the other day (follow me here), searching for my favorite quotes, and the ones that I feel particularly close to right now, in the start of 2014. I hope some of them light a fire under you, too.

1. At first glance it may appear too hard. Look again. Always look again. -Mary Anne Rodmacher

2. Not all those who wander are lost. -J.R.R. Tolkien

3. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. -Psalm 147:4

4. Perfect is boring. -Tyra Banks

5. Ain’t nobody got time for that. -Kimberly Wilkins

6. Creativity takes courage. – Henri Matisse

7. I’ll clap when I’m impressed. -Dangers

8. I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people. -Vincent Van Gogh

9. Stop the glorification of busy. -Jennifer Pastiloff

10. We cannot cure the world of sorrows but we can choose to live in joy. -Joseph Campbell

What about you? Any of these ring especially true for you? Or do you have a few quotes that you keep near and dear as you make your way through life? I would love to know — leave a comment so I can add them to my repertoire. Happy weekend! xoxo

  1. I love the Van Gogh quote the most- it speaks to my wanna-be-artist, got-no-medium self.
My quote of the past years has been “Comparison is the thief of joy.” teddy Roosevelt.

  2. I love “stop the glorification of busy.” It stopped me in my tracks, because it’s so true. So often busy is just stressful! Thanks for sharing these!

    1. Amen, Nikki! Sometimes I feel like my contemporaries wear “busyness” like a badge of honor. I’m not sure when it became the status quo, but sometimes I feel like it’s all too much. Having a schedule packed to the gills doesn’t make a person any more worthwhile or successful than someone who has time to spare. Thanks for your comment!

  3. Though they may not have originated with her, we always attribute these gems to my great-grandmother:

1.) It takes a lady to make a gentleman.

    2.) Where there’s a will there’s a lawsuit.

3.) “Every little bit helps,” said the lady as she went in the ocean.

4.) One word isn’t enough, and two are too many.

    Gotta love timeless wisdom!

  4. What a lovely idea! I love #1 and #2. One of my favourites is: “Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” (Mark Twain)

  5. Love your quotes! Here’s one of my favorites: “Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” – Salvador Dali

  6. Someone already mentioned the Roosevelt quote about comparison, and boy do I need to remember that one all the time. So much so that I framed it in our living room.
Also, I love “stop the glorification of busy.” That has been on my mind a lot lately. I really hate busy.

  7. I love this post! Since I was little I kept a notebook filled with quotes I loved. My favorite ones are from Marisa de los Santos’ books. Particularly, this one: “But some things, no matter how unlikely, are just supposed to happen. You know what I mean. Some things just smack of the future and feel part of an overarching rightness.”
