special guest and giveaway: the lovely cyd!

Okay, fine, I’ll admit it:  I have a blogger crush.  Since I discovered the whole wedding and design blog scene, Cyd from The Sweetest Occasion has continuously wowed me with the creativity, impeccable taste, and beautifully curated choices that she makes on her blog.  Now, having gotten to know her just a teeny bit better, she wows me with her kindness and coolness (especially toward a newer blogger like yours truly).  She generously featured our engagement photos on The Sweetest Occasion a couple of months ago, and more recently she agreed to do a little interview for Lovely Indeed, so that we could all get to know her.  Lucky us!  Lovelies, meet Cyd.

Tell us a little more about The Sweetest Occasion — what made you start the blog?
I began blogging back in 2004 as a bit of a personal and creative outlet when I was logging long hours in the studio as an architecture student. I stumbled upon wedding blogs soon after becoming engaged in 2008 and started The Sweetest Occasion a few months later as a way to document our own wedding planning process and to share inspiration I found along the way. Remarkably I found that a whole new world of friendship and possibilities opened up. After getting married, one of my first projects was to move the blog (originally hosted on Blogger), redesign the site and grow it into a daily wedding blog. The blog has since evolved to include a lot more than just weddings because I blog about the things I am personally passionate about – parties, paper, handmade goods, entertaining, decor and celebrations of all shapes and sizes. This month will actually bring a whole new look to the site, some new features and hopefully a new crowd of brides and party lovers to read along and join in the fun!

And speaking of blogging, what’s your favorite thing about maintaining The Sweetest Occasion?  And do you have a least favorite thing?
The thrill of blogging always has been and always will be the friends – the friends continue to make me routinely fall in love all over again with being a blogger. But undoubtedly, the readers are the ultimate source of joy. When the juggling of things gets to feel like too much and you get a great email from someone telling you how much they love your blog, it makes it all worth the effort. Blogging is all about the community, all about the people. My least favorite thing…sometimes it’s a job without glory. And it truly is a job. A job I love, but a very huge commitment requiring a lot of time and effort. I often joke that some day I am going to invent the 30 hour day because I could just get so much more done in a day! When I do, I’d like the win the Nobel Peace Prize, please and thank you.

How about your training and background;  what made you so stinkin’ good at what you do?
I’m not sure there is a blogger out there who ever really imagined becoming a blogger, it’s just sort of something that finds you. My background is pretty diverse, but blogging is actually where it all comes together and makes perfect sense. I have been a writer and a daydreamer my entire life. As a kid I dreamed of being a photographer, a published author, a world famous architect, an interior designer, a wedding planner, and Martha Stewart. You know, all in a day’s work. I have a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and an MBA with a concentration in marketing and management. Somehow my design-driven side and my business-minded side have merged and created a perfect balance. I often describe myself as both left brained and right brained – I can be really artsy fartsy and at the same time incredibly analytical and numbers driven, which I think really works for me and what I do.
You also work at one of my very favorite letterpress stationery shops.  Let’s talk Smock.  Can you tell us a bit more about what you do there?
I am the marketing and publicity guru in residence at Smock. It’s a diverse, ever-changing job that entails a lot of writing, a lot of talking with friends in the stationery world, coordinating advertising, blogging, conducting market analysis, assisting with product development, trend watching and heading up all of our social media outreach. It’s incredibly challenging but a whole heck of a lot of fun.

How about a few of your favorite things from Smock?  Anything in the line that you just can’t get over because it’s too gorgeous?
At the moment I am most in love with our sticky notes – they are FSC certified (meaning the strictest of forestry practices were used) and made of 100% post consumer recycled paper. Oh and they are really really pretty. I use sticky notes like crazy so when we were talking about coming out with a line of sticky notes and other office-related products I was over the moon. I am currently obsessed with the new gift wrap and gift boxes we have coming out in January – new colors and patterns that make me happy every time I see them. Stay tuned!

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty:  what inspires you?  Is there a time or situation when you feel your most creative?
My beloved late grandmother is an endless source of inspiration – it was her love of life, parties, gardening, pretty houses and the latest fashion that have largely molded me into who I am today. The Sweetest Occasion has long been dedicated to her memory and it is her love of hummingbirds that inspired my logo when I first began blogging years ago. She epitomized all that hummingbirds are said to symbolize in many cultures and I carry that forth with me every day – she savored every moment and made each day as beautiful as she could.

I actually feel my most creative when I’m on the water. I grew up on the water and while I love the hustle and bustle of a city, I’m really most at home and most at ease on the water. When I’m burned out or needing to fuel the inspiration fires, I go home and spend a long weekend on the lake with my family. We sip wine, cook s’mores, take long walks with the dogs, kayak and make waffles for breakfast after sleeping in late. No internet, no email, and to whatever extent we can resist, no cell phones. It’s pure bliss. I usually leave the weekend completely reengerized with a notebook full of notes, thoughts and ideas that I can’t wait to tackle.

What else do we need to know about Cyd?
I am a multi-faceted person. I might be more complicated than I’d like to be at times. I am an endless dreamer, a hopeless romantic, a busy-body, a workaholic, a procrastinator, a lover of sleep who admittedly sleeps too little and an obsessively devoted mommy to two dogs, Nina (a six year old black lab) and Colby (a five month old golden retriever). Above all else, I am a daughter, a sister, a wife, a granddaughter, an aunt, a niece and a cousin to the most amazing family a girl could ever want and without them I would never have the bravery to chase my dreams.

And for old time’s sake, a this-or-that quick-fire survey:

Chocolate or vanilla? chocolate (unless it’s ice cream – always always vanilla for ice cream)
Coffee or tea?
coffee. black.
Heels or flats?
heels (even when I know I should be in flats)
Diamonds or pearls?
diamonds (I admit to loving some bling)
Madonna or Cyndi Lauper?
Madonna! (was there ever any doubt?)
Skiing or surfing?
surfing (I grew up on the water and can’t get enough)
Wine or bubbly?
wine (dry and white, usually a Riesling)

  3. Note cube: would sit on my desk in the theatre office and give me extra incentive to keep some desk space clear and organized, just so’s I could look at it.

Notepads: tucked into my purse for next semester when I’m officially a graduate student — brightening my notetaking in 19th Century English Literature!

    ps: eye <3 U

  7. After taking a big financial hit last year, I finally get to go back to school in the spring to finish my degree- I’d use the notebooks as cheerful school supplies! The sticky notes would be on my desk for bookmarking pages in bridal mags and leaving myself to-do reminders 🙂

  9. Excellent interview Schmelsea. You’ve made me a reader of The Sweetest Occasion.

I would love to win the fabulous Smock Swag. Clearly, as a teacher one can never have enough sticky notes. Of course these would not be wasted on notes to students…. No! No! No! These would be MY sticky notes. They will sit proudly on my desk as if to say, “Look at me! I am beautiful, as is this woman sitting behind this desk for hours and hours on end!” And I would love them, and cherish them… but still use them.

Also, I have made it my (early) New Year’s Resolution to document all of the wonderful things I see and hear… if only I could document my findings in as beautiful a notebook such as those featured above… The first thing on my list of “All the Things I <3" would be "1. The notebooks in which I write all the things I <3.

I so totally want to win. <3 LOVE.

  11. As a film student, I have to come up with a lot of ideas, see. And so many things are running through my head all the time- things I see, the perfect shot, character ideas, lighting ideas, story ideas, funny instances, things that made me laugh, made me cry, beautiful pieces of the world that many people pass without notice.

It is of utmost importance to be taking note of these things (and it cannot be more prominently stressed than by the faculty here).

    Soooo….

    1) the notebook would be carried with me at all times. it would hold my ideas, my treasured thoughts; the things I would later look at and go back to, to take, to hone, and to shape into the works I will create here in film school.

    2) the stickies I would use for an idea wall! I have a blank wall in my dorm and I haven’t found anything I truly want to do with it yet. But with those babies I would put words, phrases, and summaries of ideas and tack them on my wall. Then every time I’m in my room I can be thinking about my craft, coming up with ideas, and ultimately BE INSPIRED! 😀

love ya! can’t wait to see you soon..

  15. I would use the notebooks for my client records. I am currently attending beauty school and soon i will need to bring 4 new clients in a month and i feel that the notebooks would be a good way to keep track of them all with the name, phone numbers and such so that i could contact them and keep their color numbers and cuts written down.
The post it notes I would use to on my station at school to remind myself for the day with clients are coming in, what colors, tools and the time that they would be there.
