A primary bedroom that’s filled with light, color, and an airy feel? Sign me up!

In remodeling our 1950’s ranch-style home, we wanted to create a true primary bedroom suite that was spacious and felt like a little getaway.

From the built-in fireplace to the window seat to the pink barn door, I love how it came together. Read on for sources to everything.

Fireplace in the Primary Bedroom

When we started planning the room, we knew we wanted it to feel bright, airy, and spacious. So right off the bat we planned lots of windows (which is usually my go-to).

Now, I was never a girl who daydreamed about her wedding or her future husband or any of that stuff. But what I did daydream about was a window seat and a fireplace in my bedroom one day.

I always knew that if I was going to build a new room, those would be my top priorities. And I still kind of can’t believe that we figured out a way to get them both incorporated into the room!

The fireplace is from Kozy Heat and it’s awesome. It’s just a small, simple unit but it’s such a dream to just turn on the fire in the morning or while we’re winding down at night.

Here’s a similar model.

I highly recommend getting a model with a remote control and a timer for safety and ease of use.

Primary Bedroom Windowseat

The window seat isn’t quite done in these photos, but for a final look you can check out the cushion that I made right here.

In these images we have some throw pillows holding the space, along with a lush plant. I actually really like the look of a lot of plants on a window seat.

If you’re planning on putting in a window seat I recommend using the space underneath with either drawers, like we did here, or a flip-up bench top.

The maximization of storage is a huge help.

Modern Headboard

The bedframe and headboard you see here were discontinued but here is a very similar one.

I love the modern feel and vibrant color, along with how it’s all softened a bit by the tufting.

We finished off the bed with all white bedding, a fun throw, and a matching pair of midcentury nightstands.

Wood Detailing

A couple of other fun features we added to the room? Those exposed ceiling beams and the pink barn door on the new closet!

The exposed beams are actually a faux wood finish — we wanted the look of beams but not the insane cost.

So we found a faux white oak veneer that looks and feels exactly like the white oak on our living room fireplace mantel. It was a really cost-effective solution.

The barn door saves the space of a swinging door, and it makes for a beautiful visual impact as well.

And when I asked if I could paint it pink he was all over it, which makes him double cool. The paint color is Sherbet Fruit by Behr.

The door is from Home Depot and the gold hardware is from Walmart — another super cost-effective addition.

Decor and Extra Pieces

The wall mounted sconces by the bed are a DIY we put together years ago using IKEA lighting. You can see that project here.

Gold hardware for the drawers in a brushed brass finish add a polished look to all of the cabinetry.

And I know ceiling fans are controversial, but with our hot summers they’re sorely needed! This one is unobtrusive and easy to mount.

  1. Holy cow, this is SO beautiful! I’ve been wanting an upholstered bed frame for a while. Maybe someday! And very interesting that Wayfair has their own mattress line now. There are so many internet mattresses available these days, I’m very overwhelmed by the options.

  2. This is beautiful! I love how bright and fun everything looks! I will definitely have to steal a few of these ideas for our master bedroom. 🙂

  3. Such a stunning room! I am so excited for you guys. LOVE that you got your fireplace, too! We have a tiny master bedroom (big old house with huge main rooms but small bedrooms) that currently I haven’t even touched. Like, we dropped the furniture in a year and a half ago and there it sits. This winter I am FINALLY going to get to work on it. Going for that tiny but cozy and bold look since it’s so small. Stay tuned! I’ll be forever jealous of your king sized bed and your bathroom. lol

  4. This room turned out so gorgeous – it’s so bright and airy and all the little details are just amazing. And I love those nightstands! You guys did an amazing job pulling everything together. 🙂

  6. That is a great color of pink on your door. Did you purchase it that color or did you paint it yourself? What color is it?

  7. Those are the IKEA lamps I want for my bedroom too but I love what you’ve done to the cord and how you attached them to the wood. Do you have a DIY post on that project?

  8. This bedroom is GORGEOUS!! I am loving the pops of color! We’re working on redoing our whole master bedroom right now, once we get the carpets cleaned, we’re going to get new decor, this is definitely my inspiration! Thanks for sharing!!
