prime it

Smashbox Primers

Do you guys wear a lot of makeup? I wouldn’t classify myself as wearing heavy makeup, but there’s seriously something I never leave the house without putting on, and that’s foundation. My skin tends to be a little iffy (which is a sensitive subject, for those of you who might be the same), so it makes me feel better about how I look.

About 4 years ago, I also started including Smashbox primers into my everyday makeup routine, and I’ve literally never gone back. I don’t know what it is, but this stuff is magic for me. The purpose of a foundation primer is usually to prep the skin for foundation and make it go on more smoothly, but the Smashbox primers seem to do all that and more. I swear, when I wear this stuff my skin feels more velvety, the little lines around my eyes are smoothed out, and my makeup lasts about 3-4 hours longer than when I don’t use it. I mean, why would you ever say no to that?!

Smashbox Primers

And one of my favorite things about the Smashbox primer line is that they have a formula for just about every type of skin you can imagine. I started out just using the standard — Photo Finish. Which is awesome. But then I realized that I could get a little more specific, and started using the Color Correcting formula. It’s crazy, because it looks green in the tube, but it balances out the red in my skin like gangbusters! And now the line is even more multifaceted; they’ve got formulas for dry skin, for dark spot correcting, for blemish-prone skin, and on and on. (Theres even one with SPF, and you know that’s crucial!)

Smashbox Primers

I guess all of this is to say: as someone who’s had problem skin in the past and been really self-conscious about it, I know how important it is to feel like your face is beautiful every day! And when I began using this magical stuff, it truly made a difference. But now, back to my original question — what’s your makeup routine like? Are you a two-seconds-flat girl, or a in-the-mirror-for-an-hour girl? xoxo

  1. I used to generally be a “canNOT leave the house without eyeliner and mascara girl.” And in the past year, particularly the past few weeks, I have become the bare-faced, “slather on some SPF30 lotion and GTFO girl.” I think it’s mainly to do with routine–my Tues/Wed/Thurs, I leave the house at 7am and get back at 10, 10:30pm. I’m generally functioning on 4-5 hours of sleep on those days, so my eyes are more sensitive then. Plus I like saving the 5-10 minutes in the AM. I’ve been dolling up the eyes for the occasional event (brunch, upcoming wedding), but I’ve never been a foundation/lipstick/blush gal.

But EVERYONE needs to use SPF.

    1. Amen, SPF sista! The older I get the more crazy I become about it. And by the way, you are one of those girls who doesn’t need any makeup at all! A barefaced beauty. 🙂

  2. I’m generally just mascara and a powder foundation, but that stuff looks and sounds amazing! May have to experiment with something new…and I’m with you with the redness, so it’s great to know that works!

  3. I used to be like a no makeup girl. Unless I was going out. Lately I’ve really gotten into BB creams and I love them. I have pretty good skin, but I definitely have red areas and as I get older it’s definitely getting worse. Love how a BB cream balances everything out without covering up what my momma gave me. And I can’t leave home without a good mascara (Lancome Definicils for me) and lip gloss!

  4. I know how you feel about having iffy skin! I always like to blame my dad for cursing me with his super sensitive skin. I’m curious, do you use the primer on your eye lids as well?

    1. Hi Jess! I use the primer all over, including a light pass over the eyelids. If I’m wearing eyeshadow that day, though, I’ll also use an eyelid primer. I don’t always, but eyeshadow tends to just slide right off my eyelids if I don’t.

  5. I’ve recently started using the Smashbox Photofinish Light primer, and I’m loving it. Even more than that, I love the Urban Decay Primer Potion on my eyelids. I thought it was going to be overrated, but my eye makeup lasts all day and does not budge.

  6. Thanks for sharing your makeup routine Chelsea. Your skin is so pretty. I went out and bought the Smashbox Photo Finish (green one) last night and tried it today for the first time. I think I’m in love. So glad I read this post.
