The big game is coming soon, and you know what that means — snacks! Sorry, football fans, but I’m mostly in it for the food and beverage. Let’s be honest, a soft pretzel paired with the perfect beer ranks way higher in my book than a field goal. I have a feeling that most of you are on the same page. So we came up with four super simple hacks to create these fancy soft pretzels, and found beers that were meant to be with each one. As we were making these, we got so excited we started planning our game day party right then and there.
Of course, it goes without saying, we always make sure our guests drink responsibly, and that they get home safely afterward. I was so excited to see that Uber is getting into the game day festivities by encouraging us all to be #DesignatedRiders. Did you know that there’s a huge increase in alcohol-related crashes on the day of the big game? I’m all for celebrating, but it becomes our responsibility to end our celebrations in a way that doesn’t endanger ourselves or others. So Uber has a simple solution: open the app and request a ride home. Choose the back seat, rather than the front. Leave your keys at home and be a designated rider.
And if you do leave your keys at home, you better plan on trying some of these pairings. They’re so fun to make, and will take your game day celebrations to the next level! If you’re hosting, you can even create a pretzel bar where guests can create their own flavors and try them with different drinks to see which work well together. We came up with four incredible pretzel flavors: Bacon-Cheddar, Cinnamon-Sugar, Everything-But-The-Bagel, and Classic Salt. Read on for our recipe hacks and pairing recommendations!
- plain frozen soft pretzels
- pretzel salt
- raw sugar
- cheddar cheese
- everything-but-the-bagel seasoning
- spritz bottle filled with water
- your beverages of choice
Step 1: Start by baking your pretzels according to the instructions on the packaging.
Step 2: For Bacon-Cheddar pretzels, sprinkle cooked, chopped bacon over the warmed pretzel, then cheddar cheese over the bacon. Put the pretzels back in the oven for another minute or so, until the cheese melts.
Step 3: For Cinnamon-Sugar pretzels, fill a shallow dish with raw sugar and sprinkle the sugar with a light dusting of cinnamon. Spritz a warmed pretzel with a light coating of water on the top side. Then dip the damp top side into the cinnamon and sugar mixture until covered.
Step 4: For Everything-But-The-Bagel and Classic Salt pretzels, follow Step 3. (Place bagel seasoning or salt on a shallow plate, spritz pretzels with water, and dip into the seasoning.)
Now that your pretzels are prepped, pair them up! We love the Everything-But-The-Bagel pretzel with a light pilsner. The Bacon-Cheddar is terrific with an IPA. For a sweet tooth, pair the Cinnamon-Sugar with a dry cider. And the Classic Salt just goes perfectly with a good old fashioned root beer, which would also be perfect for anyone under 21.
Hope you try this little hack at your game day parties! And I also hope that you and your guests take the #DesignatedRider pledge, to help keep streets safe on game day. It’s so easy to just open the app and request an Uber when you’re ready to head home. So whatever you’re doing for the big game, be safe! xoxo
