I look forward to Friday pizza night all. week. long. I’m not sure what exactly makes pizza on a Friday night so good, but there’s definitely some magic there. Maybe it’s the fact that the week is over, or maybe it’s the idea of a standing date with my family, or maybe it’s just that pizza is delicious. Maybe all of the above! However you slice it (see what I did there?), pizza night is the greatest. The peeps at Freschetta totally get me, because they’ve gone so far as to coin it #FreschettaFriday! So to celebrate, we’ve got some of our favorite Freschetta flavors and these little DIY kids’ aprons that I made for pizza night. Henry and Maggie go absolutely bonkers when we let them put on their aprons and “cook” pizza with us.

When I say “cook”, I mostly mean add olives to the pizza. Because these kids would eat a can of olives in about two minutes flat. But they love that they get to be in charge of their toppings, and I love that the Freschetta pizzas are easy, delicious, and customizable. (The Naturally Rising Crust on that pepperoni pizza is INSANELY good.) Bonus thing about the aprons — if the kids keep them on while they eat, their shirts stay clean! Here’s how we made them.

Materials (Makes One Apron)

  • placemat
  • ribbon
  • sewing machine
  • embroidery thread
  • embroidery hoop
  • needle
  • button
  • scissors
  • pencil

Make Time: 1.5 Hours

Step 1: Take your placemat and place it vertically on a surface. This will be the general shape of your apron. Cut away the top two corners of the placemat. If the kiddo you’re making the apron for is very tiny, you can cut away some of the length as well.

Step 2: Fold over and hem all edges that you cut off.

Step 3: On the front of the apron, use a pencil to lightly sketch a design. We made one that says “sous chef,” and one that has an embroidered pizza on the front.

Step 4: Insert the front of your apron into an embroidery hoop. Use embroidery thread to trace your design in thread. If you need to brush up on your embroidery stitches, we have a great tutorial right here.

Step 5: Make the ties for the apron. You’ll need to measure on your little one how long the neck strap should be; measure from their upper chest, around the neck, and back down to the upper chest. Cut that length of ribbon and hem both ends. On one end of the ribbon, use the button hole attachment to create a button hole. On one side of the back-top of your apron, sew on a button. On the opposite side, stitch down the non-button-hole side of your ribbon.

Step 6: Cut two lengths of ribbon, each long enough to wrap around your kiddo’s waist fully. Hem both ends, then stitch one end of each onto either side of the middle of your apron to create waist ties.

Tie your aprons on and get cookin’! And while you’re at it, snag some Freschetta pies at the supermarket so all you have to do on a Friday evening is pop them into the oven. (They even have gluten free options, you animals!) And on that note, can you guess what we’re having for dinner tonight? 😉 xoxo
