Living Room and Office Before and After

Doesn’t it just feel so good when you move into a new place and finally things start coming together? It always takes me a million years to get a room to a place where I love it (and even then I am a chronic rearranger). Sometimes I just have a heck of a time committing to hanging a certain thing on the wall, or moving a piece of furniture here or there. I just like to live with things for a while to let them marinate and see how I feel about it all. It drives Mr. Lovely absolutely bananas. Good thing he likes me. But we finally finished a couple more rooms in the house recently and I thought it would be fun to do a little before and after feature, because I snapped some crazy photos from back in the day when these rooms were just basically piles of stuff.

Our living room is gigantic and kind of long & narrow, with one wall that’s basically entirely windows. So it was kind of tricky to arrange. We wanted it to feel open and airy but also cozy and lived-in. Does that exist? I don’t know. But I think we just about got there. Here’s the before and after.

Living Room and Office Before and AfterBefore we moved in we refinished all of the original hardwood, so we wanted to keep plenty of it showing but still have a cozy place to sit or put your feet. West Elm was kind enough to send us their totally rad honeycomb rug, which has turned out to be the perfect solution. They sent along one of their fab lacquer trays as well, which we’re using as a coffee table (on top of the Kilim Pouf that we already had). We saved our pennies and snapped up a pair of Sloan chairs, upholstered in that amazing deep blue, and they’re maybe my favorite pieces of furniture in the house. Ohmygosh those chairs.

I love hanging out in this room! We pull the guitars off the wall and make up goofy songs, and we have friends over for drinks, and we watch all of the family babies run around and flop on all of the ottomans. It’s a good room.

And now, the office before and after!

The new office is kind of a mishmash of our old desks with some new tricks. West Elm made another dream come true and sent the best office chairs in all the land. Mr. Lovely and I roll around and twirl in those things all day long. I’m also loving these little marble boxes — perfect for little office this-and-that’s. (Like the gold paperclips that you obviously need.) We put up shelves on either side of our desks and stocked them with our faves, and it’s totally a lady-side/man-side situation. Other than that, the office stays pretty simple, with lots of moveable pieces that we can roll around for photoshoots and the like. I’m super into it. It’s like working in a big, beautiful white box.

Stay tuned for more pieces of the new house as we keep finishing it bit by bit! A big smushy hug to West Elm for being my favorite place to shop and for helping us get the new place outfitted. Have a good weekend, guys! xoxo

  1. I love your living room! I have an equally long and narrow living space, and it flows right into the dining room. I’m still trying to figure out how to separate the spaces without making the room feel awkwardly cut off. I’ve made progress, but I’m still moving and adding/removing things every week. We have been here for three months, and I’m hoping to have everything done by the end of the year!

  2. Love the new office! Did you DIY the desk? It is exactly what I am looking for. I would love to know where you bought it or how you made it!
    Thanks!
