Hunting for a Baby Friendly Coffee Table

| | | | | |

I know, I know. The kid isn’t even born yet and I’m looking for baby friendly furniture. But with a 4 year old niece and a 1 year old nephew who live around the corner and come to visit often, I feel like we might as well get a jump on it. My sister and her babies were over to visit the other day and it took 4 adults to keep my adorable nephew from killing himself on our sharp-cornered coffee table. So obviously I took it as an opportunity to do a little shopping research.

Right now I’m thinking anything padded and without sharp edges is an improvement. But ideally, it would also be padded and upholstered in a fabric that is easy to clean, in a shape that a kid can’t tip over, and in a dream world you could stuff toys inside it to hide them when you need to clean the house in a hurry. Am I asking too much here?

I hopped online and found a few options — not all of them are perfect, but it’s a start! I always get so excited when I find kid-friendly stuff that doesn’t make me feel like I have to abandon my whole aesthetic, ya know?

From top of post: Furry stool. Woven bench. Blue stool. Black & white pouf. Faux leather bench. Orange ottoman. Woven coffee table. Upholstered bench.

What do you think? Any faves? I know that round woven table is probably not the smartest of the bunch, but I threw it in there for good measure. By the way, I found all of these on Target.com, which is a whole new world of being obsessed with Target. You know how we all love it, right? Well shopping on their website is like if you walked into your local Target and multiplied it by 100. There are so many really fantastic pieces online that you can’t get in stores — but you can order them and they just show up at your doorstep like fairies dropped them off. Target fairies. There’s always free shipping on $50 or more, and you can return ship for free (or return it in-store, which is totally my jam). In fact, I think about half of my picks here are only available at Target.com.

But I digress! I’d love to know which ones you love and which ones you think would just be impractical with a little one. For the smaller pieces, I might even be envisioning two of them sitting side by side. Like two adorable little round orange ottomans in front of the couch. I know, I’m just getting crazy now. Tell me your thoughts! And for more Target goodness, visit them at Facebook and Twitter. xoxo

  1. haha, oh this cracked me up. My 9 month old just started pulling herself up to stand like 2 weeks ago and all she wants to do is grab our (pointy) coffee table edge and pull herself up, plop back on the floor, repeat…All. DAY. LONG. My MIL says to get rid of our coffee table. Um. No. I will get those things that surround the table edges. And I will wish that I purchased one of the cool tables you have above. I really like the storage ones (easy baby toy cleanup!) but I also really like that woven round one….

  2. I’m sure you’ll find something that works perfectly. My faves are the black and white pouf and the two at the very top.

  3. I’m torn on this. I like the look of some of these but I want a solid surface to put a drink down on. Maybe I just need to invest in pretty trays for that.

    1. I hear ya! We were thinking the same thing. I think we found one, though, that’s padded but still firm enough to keep a drink steady with a coaster underneath it. Yeah!

  4. i have a couple of the nate berkus ones and they are perfect. they were hard to find IN store- but worth the trips to different cities 😀 my dogs are obsessed with them and they’re ADORABLE. super good spend, merms! do it ! do it! <3

  5. Oh, you are killing me! 🙂 I just love it that you are “researching”. Even though they are all adorbs, that woven bench is just perfect. Of course, anything that looks like a handwoven kilim is perfect in my book. It makes me want to do a design for you just based on these selections! Have fun.

  6. We have one with storage that has a hydrolic lid. Great for toys and storage but not super stylish. We bought it from Costco!

  7. I think both of the ones with hidden storage are good options, and I also like the upholstered bench. We currently have a large, rectangular upholstered ottoman that serves as our coffee table and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been grateful that we don’t have to worry about our son hurting himself. Leather or faux leather is probably a really great option – our upholstered one definitely shows the wear and tear of a toddler, but it’s worth it to me for the peace of mind it brings!

  8. You should use distinct colored icing, or else you may possibly also acquire Halloween cookie and
cake developing kits on the nearby craft shop which can be full
of enjoyable formed sprinkles, precolored frostings,
and adornments which you could add. Wowing your
guests this way isnt a new idea, but rather based on a very old,
tried-and-true one. And because they look like
cookie treats, kids will also like them for a quick and healthy breakfast before school.
