Using a DIY Plant Stand to Add to Modern Decor

I love the design of this DIY plant stand for so many reasons! We created the design with both form and function in mind.

The colorblocked paint treatment adds a modern touch, and takes it from just a functional piece to a really cool home decor item. You can choose a cool, calm, muted shade like we did, or go more bold to make it stand out!

I think the plant stand looks really pretty in a bathroom, kitchen, or living area. Ours has moved to a few different rooms, and I love that the casters on the bottom make it really easy to move a heavy plant and pot around the house,

How to Make a DIY Plant Stand

So let’s do this! Here’s our process, outlined in detail. You may not need both saws, but we used both a miter and a table saw. You can also ask at your local hardware store for help making simple cuts if you don’t have a table saw.

Materials

Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus Drying Time)

How to make a rolling plant stand
  1. Measure the base of your planter pot. Cut two lengths of the wooden dowel (using the miter saw) that are each 2″ longer than the width of the base of your pot.
  2. Mark a 2″ section in the center of each dowel. Set your table saw to a 1″ depth and notch out the 2″ section on each dowel.
  3. Screw the two pieces together, creating a cross with the two dowels meeting where they have been notched out. Apply a bit of wood glue where they meet to strengthen the cross.
  4. Use a drill to create a pilot hole on the end of each of the four legs of the plant stand. Screw in one wheel to each pilot hole.
  5. Use BEHR paint to paint the wood as you desire. Allow the paint to fully dry. To recreate our painted look, paint all of the wood with the Kombucha shade. Allow to dry. Then mask off the top half of the wood and paint the lower half with In the Moment. Remove painter’s tape and allow to dry.
  6. Add your plant and enjoy!

Choosing the Perfect Houseplants

I outlined many of the low-maintenance houseplants in our house right here. Any of those would be great if you have mid-range light in your home! If you have low light, you can still choose one of those but I recommend moving the plant into a room with more light for a couple of days each week.

Plant something you love in a pretty pot and place it on your DIY plant stand! I love the look of it, and the simple touch it adds to the room.

The hidden pop of cool color on the underside of the stand might just be my favorite part. The brass casters make it look polished but function beautifully and make it easy to roll our plants from room to room.

We loved the stand so much we actually got another set of the casters to create an extra stand for another one of our larger plants. I guess we were inspired! Here’s hoping you’re inspired too. xoxo
