In keeping with my tradition of sharing our group Halloween costumes the year AFTER we wear them, I hereby present to you, my favorite group Halloween costume ever: In-N-Out Burger!

Check out our other group Halloween costumes here:

Last year we were having lunch at our very favorite burger joint and tossing ideas around about what to be, when I casually tossed out the idea of us being In-N-Out. We all sort of laughed about it and then realized super fast that it would be insanely adorable. And it was!

We had an absolute ball, and people loved seeing us trotting around town on Halloween. Here’s how to make a family In-N-Out Burger Halloween Costume!

What’s In-N-Out Burger?

Oh, hello, East Coasters and foreign friends! In case you’re not familiar, In-N-Out is a beloved burger chain on the West Coast of the U.S. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something magical about those delicious burgers. And they make the fries fresh (literally cut the potatoes right in front of you) so they’re beyond delicious.

Also, don’t get me started on the milkshakes. Basically, it’s a really friendly, reliable, delicious place to get a burger. Henry and Maggie love it because they also give kids sticker puzzles and hats when you eat there. 😉

So first! If you’re going for it, you’ve got to decide who’s going to be what. The bulkiest costume is the french fries, so we opted to have Maggie be fries. We figured it would be easier to have kid-sized fries than adult-sized fries. You could also get super creative and add a drink cup to your list if you have more people in your group.

Before you get your costumes started, head to your local In-N-Out. Ask at the counter if they would mind sparing a couple of hats and a few extra sticker sheets. Henry kept a bunch of the sticker sheets in his apron (I sewed a little pocket on the front) and handed them out to people all day long. It was pretty cute.

Make an In-N-Out Burger Flipper Costume

Let’s start with Ryan and Henry’s costumes! I’m calling them burger flippers, but I think In-N-Out calls them associates? Or maybe servers? In any case, it’s the dudes in the white hats with the red aprons. Here’s what you’ll need:

Materials

  • white button-up shirt
  • white pants or jeans
  • In-N-Out hat
  • black belt
  • black shoes
  • white cardstock
  • pin back
  • hot glue
  • red fabric
  • snaps or hook and eye
  • sewing machine and notions
  • optional: In-N-Out safety pin
  1. Start by sewing the apron. You’ll basically just take a rectangle of red fabric that is wide enough to fit around the waist, then add two inches to that. The length should start at your waist and end mid-thigh. Fold and iron the ends to make clean hems and sew a straight stitch all the way around all four edges. So now you should have a hemmed rectangle.
  2. If you’d like to sew a pocket on the front, start by sewing another smaller rectangle like you did in Step 1 (you can customize the size of your pocket). Then lay the pocket on the front of the apron rectangle and sew down the sides and bottom with a straight stitch, directly on to the apron. Leave the top open. There! A pocket!
  3. Sew on your snap or hook and eye closure to the top of each corner of the apron to be able to attach it behind your back. Optional: If you want to get super detailed, you can add the giant safety pin to the back of the apron once it’s on.

4. To make the In-N-Out nametag, you can find their logo online with a simple Google image search. Then in a program like Photoshop, add your own name to the middle of the nametag. Print it out on white cardstock and glue a pinback to the back.

5. Put on your white shirt, white pants, and the rest of the pieces you created. If you asked your local In-N-Out for stickers, keep some in your apron pocket to hand out on Halloween.

Make an In-N-Out French Fry Costume

Our friend Kelly had a great french fry costume tutorial, which we used to create the actual fries. So check that out! Her fries were in a box and we wanted ours in a classic In-N-Out bag, so we figured that part out. Read on to make your own In-N-Out french fry costume!

Materials

  1. Make the bag. It should be about the length of your armpits to just above your knees (check out the photos of Maggie for reference). For the width, you can eyeball it to make it look like the right dimensions for a fry bag. Cut two pieces of white felt in these dimensions. Lay them on top of one another and stitch down the two sides. You should now have a wide tube of felt. Turn it right side out so that the seams are hidden inside.
  2. Sew on two pieces of elastic to act as straps, one on either side of the bag where it will hit the shoulders. Sew one piece from the front to the back on the right and another on the left.
  3. Add the red details. Cut out three of the classic In-N-Out palm trees, and four red strips. Use hot glue to attach them to the bottom of the fry bag.
  4. Make your fries. Cut strips of the upholstery foam and spray paint them yellow. The strips should be the height of your fry bag plus as much as you want them to stick out of the top. I’d recommend cutting one strip and testing it to get an idea of how tall you’d like them. You can read Kelly’s tutorial for more in-depth info on how to cut the foam.
  5. Once your fries are cut and painted (and thoroughly dry), use hot glue to glue them on to the inside back of the fry bag. Don’t glue them to the front as well — just attach them to the back and to each other. You’ll use a ton of glue, that’s okay. We left one or two fries loose that Mags could pull out and play with.
  6. Let it all dry. Put on the leotard and leggings, then slip into the fries by putting them on over your head and wearing them like overalls.

Group Halloween Costumes are the best!

I’m not kidding when I tell you that we had the MOST FUN in these costumes. We had our friend Scot Woodman take photos of us at our local In-N-Out and all of the people working there got the biggest kick out of it. This is one group costume that really makes an impact when you walk around together on Halloween, whether you’re a family or not! It would also be perfect for a group of friends.

  1. I love it!
We recently moved from California to Colorado where there are no In-N-Out Burgers. Boo! Definitely miss them.
