hot air balloon mural

Last year when my sister was pregnant, she was brainstorming nursery decor ideas and hit on the concept of a hot air balloon room.  I’d never painted a mural before, but I blindly offered to paint one nonetheless — I figured if worse came to worse we could get some stencils and call it a day.

But before I knew it I was sketching my own balloons on transparency paper, and tracing them on the wall with the help of a good teacher friend’s overhead projector.  Between my mom, my sister, Mr. Lovely, and myself, we came up with ideas for about 8 or 10 balloons, each one a little different.  My sister didn’t want to stick to a rigid color palette — just no pastels, as I was implicitly ordered.  And I was painting before we knew whether it was a girl or boy, so I tried to keep it very non-specific.

The first step was the blue sky.  Over that went some two-tone fluffy clouds, and multi-colored hills and valleys at the bottom.  I dressed up the hills with some crops, some roads, a few bushes, and a tree with a rope swing in it.  After that, I painted in the balloons — the most fun part of all.  You’ll notice each balloon is a little different, and no two baskets or spires are the same.

It was definitely a labor of love, but worth every second!  Now the little munchkin has something to look at and dream about.  xoxo

  1. I’m so happy I discovered your blog on Sweetest Occasion! This is a very original idea and not many people have the talent to paint a mural. Kudos!
