Hocus Pocus Quote Cookies

I use this sugar cookie dough recipe over and over, and it’s truly no-fail! I love this particular recipe for a few reasons.

Most importantly, the taste is fantastic. If you like your sugar cookies to have a more almond or citrusy taste, you can add a bit of almond extract or lemon zest. It takes flavor quite well.

And the thing that really sends this recipe to the top of my list is how well it keeps its shape! For sugar cookies, especially Halloween cookies like these that have been imprinted, it’s crucial that the cookies don’t wilt, sag, or spread as they bake.

Add this recipe to your arsenal any time you need a great tasting cookie that holds its shape as it bakes.

These alphabet letters come in an imprinting set that’s super fun!

The letters come loose and detached from each other. You can select your letters, group and attach them into words, and then gently press them into your dough once it’s properly prepared.

One thing to note! Your cookies will come out perfectly if you keep the dough chilled before you press the words into them,

Once you cut your cookies with a circle cookie cutter, place the cut out cookies directly onto a baking sheet covered with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. This will help later when you add the words. Place your cut-out cookies back in the fridge, uncovered, to chill for another 20 minutes.

Once they’re chilled again, take them out and use the alphabet imprints. Ta-da!

Ingredients You’ll Need for Halloween Cookies

  • 1 cup soft unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

How to Make our Hocus Pocus Quote Cookies

  1. Use a stand or hand mixer to cream together the butter, cream cheese, and sugar until fluffy. Then beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  2. Mix all dry ingredients together in a separate bowl. Once mixed, gradually add them to your wet ingredients until thoroughly mixed and a soft dough is formed.
  3. To color your dough, separate it into as many balls as you would like different colors. Add a drop or two of color to each ball and knead until the color is evenly spread throughout the dough.
  4. Wrap individual balls of colored dough in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for an hour.
  5. On a clean surface, sprinkle some flour and set down a chilled dough ball. Flour your rolling pin and roll out the dough to about 1/4″ thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out your cookies.
  6. Place the cut-out cookies directly onto a baking sheet covered with a silpat mat or parchment paper. Chill the baking sheet, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes to get the dough firm for pressing.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350. Once your cookies are chilled, take them out and start making words! Decide on your favorite Hocus Pocus quotes and select the letters. For these, I like to press the letters in one at a time, starting with the letter in the center of your line and working your way outwards to ensure that the spacing is correct. So before you press any in, count up how many letters and lines of text you have and calculate which letter will be center. Start there and work out.
  8. When you’ve got all your words down, bake your cookies! These bake pretty quickly — mine took 7 minutes. Check them around 6 minutes or so, because they can burn quickly.

How to Make Mini Halloween Shaped Cookies

These crazy cookies that we started making are actually one of our most-tried projects, so give them a go! You can find another really great version of them right here in our Mean Girls cookie post.

For this batch of Halloween cookies, I used a couple of additional cookie cutter sets. I used a small star, and a set of geometric cutters as well.

For the moons, cut out a circle and then use a smaller circle to notch out some of the cookie to look like a crescent. And hey, a fun fact: when I was choosing the colors for the cookies, I based the palette on the cover of the original movie poster. How’s that for obsessed?

Don’t worry guys — it’s just a bunch of hocus pocus! xoxo
