Happy Mother’s Day

|

Last Valentine’s Day, Maggie threw up all over me. A couple of weeks later I spent my birthday baking a cake for her baptism. Last New Year’s Day we were in urgent care with Henry. Christmas Eve was spent with a hot, sweaty toddler sleeping off a fever on my lap. All of this is to say — motherhood never stops. Not even on holidays. And especially not on Mother’s Day.

My first Mother’s Day, Ryan and Henry gave me a watch. We ate breakfast at a diner (my choice) with Henry sleeping next to us in his car seat. I think after that we went to Target. Fancy? No. But I hold the memory of those pancakes and that little sleepy baby so close to my heart. I remember, it was the first time Henry took a drink of water out of a real glass. A tiny milestone. I was perfectly contented. I remember feeling like I was the one who should be celebrating them, these people who had made me a mom. The watch was beautiful but what really comes to mind about that first Mother’s Day are the tiny details of our growing family, and how all I really needed was to be together with them.

It’s so easy to look online these days and see a very glamorous version of motherhood. But I’m here to tell you, there’s not a lot of glamour at 2 am when you’re dragging yourself out of bed to feed the baby. Or when you’re going on hour three of reading books out loud. Or when both kids are sick and it’s all you can do to remember to shower that day. Nope, no glamour to be found. Just love. Endless love, lots of giving, and then giving some more. Waiting, and worrying, and hopefully lots of laughing. And then some more love on top of that.

So from one mama to probably lots of you out there — whether your kids are tucked into bed, or you’re trying to conceive, or you’re thinking of kids that are no longer here — I’m joining Pampers to be one of the first to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day, and I hope you get some pancakes. xoxo
