I hear “lavender sachet” and I immediately think of some doily-covered thing stuck in the back of an ancient underwear drawer. But I got this fresh lavender recently at the farmer’s market and I wanted to make it last somehow, so the first thing that popped into my head was a somehow cooler version of an old-school lavender sachet.

I actually ended up with a set of three, in some fabrics that update the whole thing a little bit. I think the key is to use some unexpected, funky fabrics that don’t exactly match but make an impact all together!

Psst — if you like this, you’re probably going to love making our DIY all-natural body scrub! Perfect for giving as gifts (or keeping for yourself, because it’s that good).

Materials

  • fresh lavender
  • rubber bands
  • fabric in fun patterns or textures
  • sewing machine and supplies
  • needle and thread
  • scissors
  • funnel

Make Time: 1 Hour plus lavender drying time

Start by drying out your fresh lavender. Cut off the stem about 3 inches below the blooms and band them together in small bunches. Leave the lavender out to dry in a warm, dry place, out of direct sunlight. Check the lavender after about 7-10 days to see if it’s fully dried out.

After the lavender is dried, remove the buds from the stems. They’ll come off pretty easily if you roll them gently between your fingers. (This part of the job smells really good!) Set the buds aside.

Cut six squares of fabric — two 5-inch squares, two 4-inch squares, and two 3-inch squares.

Pin right sides together of each set of squares.

Sew a straight stitch around the edges of each square, leaving about an inch of fabric open and unsewn.

Flip the squares right-side-out through the opening in the fabric.

Fill the squares with the lavender buds, using the funnel to get them into the hole in the fabric.

Once filled, use a needle and thread to sew a small hidden stitch and close the opening in the square.

That’s it! Doesn’t this one smell amazing? Our apartment was so lavender-y for a couple of days after I was working on these! Now they’re snuggled in drawers along with all of my unmentionables. I think they’d make an awesome DIY gift for a bride, too — you could even personalize with an embroidered initial. But the key is definitely to use some fun fabrics to keep these updated and fresh! Have fun! xoxo
