diy valentine: be mine heart

Up next in our DIY Valentines-for-grown-ups cavalcade is this little ditty, inspired by these adorable little “placecards” made by Ashley Meaders.

All of Ashley’s creations are so sweet and inspiring, and the wedding for which she created these little beauties has to be one of my favorites of all time.  (See more photos of it on Once Wed here.  I could look at these photos all day long!  All photos, including the one above, were taken by Our Labor of Love, another super-cool site for you to check out if you haven’t already.)

Anyway!  Let’s get down to business.  All you’ll need are some fabric scraps (I chose some in a vaguely Valenine-ish palette), needle and embroidery thread, a safety pin (decorative if you wish), scissors, and something to stuff your heart with.  I happened to have some cotton balls, which worked like a charm.

Cut two heart shapes from your fabric scraps and begin sewing around the edges with embroidery thread, wrong sides together.  A few stitches before you reach your starting point, stuff the heart, and then continue stitching until it’s closed.

Cut a small rectangle of a contrasting fabric, and dust off your embroidery skills:  stitch in any words you like.  I chose “Be Mine.”  If you’re new to embroidery like I am, here’s a super-easy how-to.  Believe me, you don’t have to be an embroidery champ for this little project. In fact, if it’s a little crooked or off-center, it’ll probably be cuter anyway!

Now pin your embroidered rectangle onto your heart, and you’re done!  Present it to your sweetie with a wink and a smile.  (Or use it as a place setting like Ashley, or stuff it with lavender and put it in a drawer, or use it to top off a box of chocolates.  You get the point.)  xoxo
