Sewing Gift: You and Me Pennant Pillow
Try this sewing gift to make something special for somebody you love! Perfect for Valentine’s Day or Christmas, a “You + Me” pennant pillow is unexpectedly sentimental and sweet.
Felt is my new favorite sewing material. Geez this stuff is easy!
I’m a total trial-and-error seamstress, so I wasn’t sure how this was gonna go.
But I’m now forever a fan of felt and I want to make these little hand sewn gifts for everyone I know.
I love the vibe of the pennant pillows, and how easy they are to make and customize.

Meaningful Gift Ideas
I love that this sewing gift is not just aesthetically very cute, but meaningful too.
You can customize the wording with anything you like (although “you + me” is very sweet): a name, a date, a place, a song lyric.
And just the fact that you made it by hand makes the gift even more special.
I took a moment to gather a few more meaningful gift ideas for you! Be sure to pin your favorites so that you can easily find them again.

Supplies You’ll Need
To create this pennant pillow gift, you’ll need some basic sewing supplies.
One tip: when choosing your felt, I recommend selecting something that’s soft and flexible (don’t use stiffened felt). Because this will be a pillow, you want to make sure that the fabrics feel nice to the touch!
- Felt in two colors
- Pencil
- Sewing machine and notions
- Scissors
- Iron
- Polyfill
Cutting Pieces to Prepare for Sewing
- From your felt, cut two pennant flags of the same size, in different colors (one for the front and one for the back of the pillow).
- Choose the color you’d like the writing to be, and cut out your words in that color. I freehanded them, because I wanted them to look kind of natural.
- Place them on the flag that will be the front of the pillow to decide how you’d like them to be arranged.
- Also cut out a long rectangle, about an inch wide, and as long as the side edge of your pennant flags.
- Iron all pieces.
Assembling the Pennant Pillow
- Using a straight stitch, sew the rectangle onto the side edge of the front flag, leaving about a 1/2-inch hem.
- Pin the words to the flag and sew these down as well. I sewed a straight stitch down the center of each letter, as though I was writing them in cursive with the sewing machine. It was slow going but definitely doable. You’ll need to pick up your presser foot and readjust your fabric often — just be sure that when you pick up the foot, the needle is inserted in the felt so that you don’t lose your place. (Unless you’re fancy and have a sewing machine that does embroidery. Then go to town!)
- Once the letters are sewn on, place the two flags together with right sides facing. Sew a straight stitch around the border, leaving a 1/4-inch hem. Leave about 2 inches open on the side edge of the pennant.
- Flip the pillow right side out by bringing all of the material through the 2-inch hole. It helps to push the corners through with a pencil or similar long, thin object. Once it’s flipped right side out, stuff with polyfill. You can use the pencil here as well to push the batting into the corners of the pillow.
- Once it’s stuffed, stitch the hole closed by hand, tie off, and trim your threads.
Give Your Sewing Gift
This would be adorable gifted with just a ribbon wrapped around it! Or include it in a basket of goodies and let it peek out the top.
I also love the idea that this could be a first sewing project for a tween or teen, and you could help them make a few of these for their besties.
Hope you enjoy making this sweet sewing gift! xoxo

This is so cute! I think it’d make a lovely Valentine’s gift for a partner. I love that it’s in your signature yellow too, it makes me know it’s by you from a mile away, but I think I’d do mine in typical Valentine pink and red 🥰💕
