With a toddler and a soon-to-be-newborn, I’m thinking sleep is going to be scarce around these parts as fall and winter approach. I remember being up with Henry in the middle of the night when he was new and sometimes even after he got back to sleep it would take me forever to drift off! So this time around I nipped the problem in the bud and made myself a sleepy little eye mask to help catch some extra zzz’s and hibernate a bit more this winter. We dreamed up the comfiest, cutest eye mask around, and bonus — it’s even filled with dried lavender to help relax off into snoozetown.

Step 1: Download and print the Sleepy Eye Mask Template. Cut out along the black line. Pin the pattern to one of your colors of fabric and cut the fabric to match the template. Repeat with the other color.

Step 2: Cut out a strip of fabric that’s 1 1/2″ x 34″. Fold in half lengthwise and pin all the way across.

Step 3: Sew a 1/4″ hem along the open edge of the long strip of fabric.

Step 4: Flip the tube of fabric right side out. You can use the tweezers if it helps you pull fabric from the inside to the outside. Be patient and just work your way down until the fabric is flipped right side out entirely.

Step 5: Pin a safety pin to one end of the elastic. Insert it into one end of the fabric tube. Start working the elastic through the tube, letting the fabric bunch along it. After a few inches, you probably want to pin the other end of the elastic to the other end of the tube so that you don’t pull it all the way through. Keep working the elastic through until you can see elastic on both ends of the fabric tube.

Step 6: Sew the elastic to the fabric at both ends of the tube to ensure that the elastic stays spread across.

Step 7: Cut 2 lengths of 2 1/2″ from your mini pompom trim. Use a glue gun to affix the pieces to the front side of your eye mask piece. Place them in an upside-down arch to look like closed eyelashes.

Step 8: If you like, embroider some embellishments on the front of your eye mask as well. Thread embroidery thread onto your needle and knot at the ends. Enter through the back side of the fabric. We embroidered a few little plus signs to look like twinkly stars. Just come up through the back and down through the front and make as many plus signs as you like. When you’re done, tie off the thread in a knot at the back of the fabric and trim the ends.

Step 9: Place the ends of the elastic strap on the front of the eye mask piece, with the ends pointing outward and even with the edges. Tack the ends of the elastic down with a few stitches on the sewing machine.

Step 10: Place right sides of both sides of your eye mask together, sandwiching the elastic between the two. Pin the edges together. Sew a straight stitch all around the edges, leaving a 2″ open hole just over the nose area of the mask.

Step 11: Flip the mask right side out and fill the mask with dried lavender through the open hole.

Step 12: Close the hole in the mask using a needle and thread, with a hidden slip stitch.

  2. Ohh this totally reminds me of Holly Golightly’s eye mask in Breakfast at Tiffany’s!

  3. Really a cute eye mask! We have an apartment facing the street and too much light gets in, so this is pretty much important to us. It’s really easy to make with your instructions. I am going to make this. Thanks.
