DIY Potted Succulents

I’m calling it a DIY, but for this one, all you really have to do is get your hands dirty. Mr. Lovely and I picked up a few cute little succulents recently to make a potted mini-garden for the new place! If you want to make one too, here’s all you’ll need:

  • plants
  • pots
  • potting soil

Fill your pot with soil to about the 1/3 or 1/2 point. Gently remove your largest plant from its packaging (if it’s stuck, gently squeezing its plastic tub from all angles will help loosen it). Carefully rough up the roots a bit, so they have a chance to dig into their new surroundings! Lower the plant into the pot and see if it’s the height you’d like; add more or remove some soil accordingly.

After it’s in position, add a bit of soil to keep it in place. Also add soil to the places where you’d like your smaller plants, to ensure that the plants are all even in the pot. Put your smaller plants into the pot in the same way you did the large one. Extra credit for doing some mini-pots, too!

When they’re all in, add soil here and there to make sure everyone is cozy! (Optional step: talk to your plants and welcome them to their hew home. I literally talk to our plants. Mr. Lovely thinks I’m bonkers and he’s probably right.) Finally, water the plants gently. Be careful not to over-water, especially if they’re succulents. Then set them out and love them to pieces! xoxo

  1. Super cute! Love succuclents and I think it’s time for a few new ones. Do they normally need a lot of sunlight? Our new place is lacking some of that :/

    1. Yeah, they like some good sun. My sister had a couple in a windowless room and they shriveled. But our indoor ones do fine with indirect sunlight so far!

  2. I’ve really been wanting to get some indoor plants to brighten up my apartment and these seem exactly perfect. Are they easy to keep alive? My poor plants usually don’t last long..

    1. If you have a little sunlight, they’re totally easy. Set them in the sun and water every 7-10 days. They hardly need any water at all. Low maintenance!

    1. Actually they were the favors at a recent bridal shower I attended. But I think they’re votive candle holders, which you can probably find at Michael’s, etc.

  3. Hi Chelsea, I love the idea of a little glass pot, just wondering if you needed to drill small holes in the bottom of them for drainage or are they fine as is, i.e. I can use any old drinking glasses at home that take my fancy?

    1. Hi Annette! I have lots of succulents doing just fine in pots with no drainage. I have found that the key is to be extremely careful of overwatering them. In the tiny ones, I think I put about 1-2 tablespoons of water every two weeks. Just enough to cover the topsoil and then sink in. They seem to be doing fine!

    1. It was a random find at a Big Lots store last year. I like to check out the gardening section in discount stores — you can find some really good stuff!

  5. I’m going through a huge succulent phase. I finished my first little layered terrarium of succulents and I have a few more on my list to make. This is so cute! Thanks for posting.
