Okay. When it’s Saturday morning and you are trolling yard sales with your husband and you see this basket and the guy says you can have it for two dollars, you take it. Two dollars?! I was like, duh. But I wasn’t a huge fan of that zig zaggy woven pattern, so I got out m’trusty paints and got down. Hence this awesome painted woven basket magic. So hit up a yard sale or a thrift store and paint yourself up one just like it!
Materials
- woven basket
- painter’s tape
- trash bag or newspaper
- paint
- paintbrush
Make Time: 1 Hour (plus drying time)
Tape off a section of your basket with painter’s tape, attaching either a cut-open trash bag or some newspaper to mask the portions you don’t want painted.
Paint the unmasked area on your basket, giving it a few coats if necessary. I happened to have white spray paint so my white coat was sprayed on. It took three coats, leaving a bit of drying time in between. Remove the masking and the painter’s tape and let dry thoroughly.
If you’d like another little pop of color to make the basket have a dipped look, add another round of painter’s tape near the bottom of the basket. My yellow coat was brushed on so I didn’t mask the remainder of the basket. If you’re spraying your second color on, be sure to mask everything with more newspaper or trash bags.
Remove the tape while the paint is still slightly wet and let the basket dry completely!
I’m totally loving this thing — it’s the perfect spot for all of our extra throw blankets and pillows. And I love the little ring of color around the bottom. And guys, it was two dollars! Have you ever come across a thrift store or yard sale find that’s now one of your favorite things? Do tell! xoxo
Geez, why haven’t I done that to all my old, bland baskets?!
Looks amazing!! I´m looking for a basket like this one but still didn´t find one I really like, hope to get one soon and paint it like you did!! 🙂

Awesome! Definitely send a photo if you try out the project.
Wow, that looks so pretty. I love that it required minimal effort. That’s my kind of DIY. 😉
Haha! My kind, too. 😉
That basket is amazing! I love the pop of yellow on the bottom – so cheerful.

This came out so pretty. I actually have a similiar basket.
Ooooh I LOVE the colors you used on this! What a beautiful transformation! Pinned 🙂
Thank you Katie! I love those colors too — so much more cheerful. 🙂
So good! honestly, have no idea how i never thought about it before!
I painted some baskets like this for a room makeover I did and while back and couldn’t believe how easy it was. It’s kind of addictive, isn’t it? Love the yellow and white color combo, Chelsea.
Love this! I am not sure I would have the eye to see that at a yard sale or have the creativity to think to paint it 🙂 This is why I LOVE your website!
Could you please let me know what that book is in the basket? Thanks
Have a beautiful day!!
Hi Janet! The book in the wire basket is the Domino Home Decor book. You can find it right here:

Wonderful! What kind of paint did you use for the yellow that you handpainted? Would just regular ol’ craft store acrylic work for that part?
Hi Danielle! Yep, that’s actually what I used. Should work just fine!
Love this idea…looks great! Where is that diamond maroon/plum pillow from!! Love that ccolor/pattern!!!;)
Hi Karah! Love that pillow, too! We actually found it here in LA at the Rosebowl Flea Market.
U R Amazing!!! Thank you so much for this!
