DIY Paint Pen Patterned Easter Eggs

One of my favorite tools for quick DIYs these days is a paint pen! It’s kind of the answer to everything.

After our office supplies and pumpkins, I for sure wanted to try them out on some Easter eggs, and it turns out they work perfectly!

Along with some spray paint (my go-to choice for coloring eggs this year), they make for Easter eggs that are super bold and fun. We made a little video to show ya how quick they come together, too!

Why Spray Paint Easter Eggs?

You’ll notice that for this particular project, and many other Easter egg designs on Lovely Indeed, I use spray paint on the eggs rather than dye.

I love to use paint on eggs for lots of reasons! For starters, I think it gives the eggs a saturated, vibrant color that you just can’t get from egg dye.

I also love that it creates an even base if you’re planning on layering anything over the color, like we do in this tutorial.

And finally, I’ve just never been a fan of the mess that egg dye makes. It’s not always successful and you’re often left with lots of cleanup.

Supplies You’ll Need for Patterned Easter Eggs

You don’t need many materials to make this modern Easter egg design!

Hard-boiled eggs or faux eggs. If you choose to use faux eggs, you’ll have the added benefit of being able to store them and bring them out again in the future to reuse as decor.

Matte or satin spray paint. Experiment with different finishes to find which you prefer.

Oil-based paint pens. Oil-based pens will give a smooth, even finish to your patterns.

How to Make Patterned Easter Egg Designs

Make Time: 30 Minutes (Plus Drying Time)

Watch our video for the super-simple how-to!

  1. Start by spray painting your eggs in a well-ventilated area. If you prefer not to use spray paint, you can also prep your eggs with traditional egg dye instead.
  2. Once the eggs have dried, prep your paint pen. Give it a good shake and hold the pen vertically over a piece of cardboard or scratch paper. Depress the tip into the paper until the paint flows through the tip. I recommend trying a few test runs of your design on your paper before applying the paint to your eggs.
  3. Once you have your Easter egg design idea, carefully draw the pattern onto your eggs with the paint pen. Hold the egg with two fingers (one at the top and one at the bottom), while you slowly rotate it around to get the pattern on all sides.
  4. Allow the egg to dry and repeat with the next egg.

How are you decorating eggs this year? You should try paint pens!
