DIY Macrame Hummingbird Feeder

We have hummingbirds in our yard! They kind of come and go a little bit and I wanted to entice them to stick around, so we came up with this pretty DIY macrame hummingbird feeder! My mom taught me macrame deep in the 80’s when I was little and I had to reach waaaaaay back in the memory bank to put this one together. But I forgot how fun it is, and how quickly it comes together! This one’s made of just a few basic knots and a little spray paint, and it’s enough to attract the hummingbirds to come hang out. We wanted to try to hang it in a couple of different spots to see which would be the best for them, so we teamed with Commandâ„¢ to hang it usingCommandâ„¢ Outdoor Wire Hooks. That way we’ve been able to move it around without damaging any hanging surfaces. Perfect!

Materials

Make Time: 1 Hour (Plus Drying Time)

Step 1: Tie a loop of cord wide enough to fit snugly around the neck of your bottle. Tie a square knot — first tie the right side over the left, then the left side over the right.

Step 2: Trim the ends of the knot.

Step 3: Cut four lengths of cord, about 3 yards each. Fold these in half. Take the first cord and place the halfway point over the loop you made. Pull the ends of that cord underneath the loop and through itself, securing it to the loop. Pull taut.

Step 4: Repeat step three with each of the other three lengths of cord. Fit the original loop over the neck of the bottle. The four cords should be evenly spaced around the four sides of the loop. Now you should have four sets of two lengths of cord each.

Step 5: Take the cord on the right of one set; from the set to its right, take the cord on the left. Tie these two cords together with a square knot, about 2-3 inches from the previous square knots. Repeat this process with the rest of the sets of cord.

Step 6: Repeat step 5 with another round of square knots; you’ll start to see a net pattern appearing in the cords.

Step 7: Taking two cords from one set, loop the right cord around the left, under, and through itself. Pull taut. Repeat this over and over until you reach the end of the right cord. You’ll see a spiral pattern being created. Once you reach the end, trim the tail of the cord.

Step 8: Repeat step 7 with the other three sets of cord.

Step 9: Take all cords and tie them in a knot a few inches above the ends of the spirals, leaving a loop at the top from which to hang the feeder.

Step 10: Optional: Spray paint sections of the cord (with the bottle removed) to create some colorful sections.

Step 11: After the cord is dry, fill the bottle with 1 part sugar and 4 parts water. Insert the feeder tube in the bottle and put the bottle in the macrame hanger.

Step 12: Clean the surface of the area where you’d like to hang yourCommandâ„¢ hook.

Step 13: Remove the blue liner and press the adhesive onto the hook.

Step 14: Remove the black liner and press the hook onto the surface for 30 seconds. After letting it cure for one hour, hang your hummingbird feeder!

We’ve had some birdies come and go from the feeder but I’ve yet to be quick enough to capture one on camera! Have you ever really sat and watched one? It’s just crazy how teeny tiny they are, and how fast. I’m hoping word spreads through the hummingbird grapevine and soon we’ll have gangs of ’em coming to sip on our little feeder! xoxo
