DIY Good Day Sign

There was an empty little spot on one of our bedroom walls, just dying to have something on it. This little spot just happened to be on some prime wall real estate for an inspirational message, so I chose some words that would help us jump out of bed every morning. Gather your materials:

  • piece of fabric 10″ x 12″
  • sewing machine
  • scissors and X-Acto knife
  • freezer paper
  • iron
  • craft paint
  • sponge brush
  • glue gun
  • twine
  • thin wooden dowels

Start by sewing your fabric. On the 12″ sides, sew a 1/4″ hem, and on the 10″ sides, sew a 3/4″ hem (or a hem large enough to accomodate your wooden dowels).

Cut out a message in your freezer paper. Put the shiny side down on the fabric and iron the freezer paper in place.

Use the sponge brush to gently brush paint onto the exposed parts of your message. Careful not to let paint seep under the edges of the paper.

Gently peel away the freezer paper. Let the paint dry for a few minutes, and then hot glue your twine in place on either corner of the top of the sign.

Finally, slip the dowels into the top and bottom seams.

That’s it! It’s so simple, but such an awesome reminder to make each day totally rad. Ours is hanging on this little hook from Anthropologie (a sweet gift from my mother-in-law!). What would you make yours say? xoxo

  1. You have so much patience to cut that out by hand. Wow! It is so cute. I want one for my classroom!

    1. Hi Lela! Freezer paper is paper with a sort of waxed coating on one side, meant to wrap food in when you put it in the freezer. Used for crafting things, you can iron it onto fabric with the waxed side down and it will adhere lightly to fabric so that you can use it as a stencil. Hope you can find some!

      1. Thanks Chelsea for the info. I googled a bit and we don’t have something like that in Germany. But luckily there’s an onlineshop who imports the stuff 🙂 Will try it for sure!

    1. Hi Pri! It’s actually a little Christmas ornament from Jonathan Adler. We got this one a couple of years ago, but I think they’re carrying a similar one this year.
