We have a whole house to decorate this year for the holidays, and I’m so stoked on it. I am all about decking those halls, y’all. And the air, for that matter! I love making the house smell all cozy and delicious. This little project covers it all — it’ll look great on your mantle and it smells amazing. So if you need a little project that’ll help deck the air this holiday season, this one might just be perfect.

Materials

  • one 8-foot piece of 4×4 lumber
  • sandpaper
  • Air Wick Enchanted Holiday candles in your favorite scent (I mixed Mrs. Claus’ Apple Pie and Evergreen Adventure, and it smelled like a Christmas wonderland)
  • craft paint in an array of reds and greens
  • craft paintbrush
  • painter’s tape

Make Time: 2 Hours (plus drying time)

Start by getting your lumber. A 4×4 is the perfect size to serve as a platform for the Air Wick candles. If you have access to a saw at home, perfect — you can cut your own lumber. If not, you can ask for cutting assistance at the hardware store. We cut our pieces into the following sizes: one 8″, one 7″, one 5″, two 4″, one 3″, two 2″, and one 1″. But feel free to choose your own adventure and make your pieces any sizes you like.

Once the pieces are cut, sand the edges lightly to be sure that there are no jagged areas. Leave the other parts of the wood blocks a natural texture.

Play with the blocks until you find an arrangement that you like. Fit the candles in among the blocks at random, being sure that they’re placed in a safe area for burning.

Peel off the label on your candles. (Air Wick made them easy to peel off so you can dress ’em up a bit! So thoughtful, no?)

Once your arrangement is settled, start painting on your forest. Choose a block and a color, tape off a tall triangle-shaped tree.

Fill in the untaped area with craft paint and allow it to fully dry. Once it’s fully dry, add another piece of painter’s tape horizontally across the tree. Paint that portion with another color. While the paint is still wet, remove all of the tape. Set the piece aside to let it dry completely.

Repeat the tree painting process on the rest of the wood blocks. Be creative! Switch up your colors or paint multiple trees on a single block. Once everything is painted and thoroughly dry, put the blocks into their arrangement and add the candles!

This project would look (and smell!) perfect on a mantle, as a centerpiece, or any other place that you need to deck the air. I’ve been moving it around here and there, trying to decide where I like it best. Maybe I’ll keep it on the move, though, because now my whole house smells like a winter wonderland. And remember to use candle safety during the holidays! Never leave a burning candle unattended, near anything that may be flammable, or for more than four hours. Keep your home safe, happy, and smelling totally delicious.
