When Easter candy is as pretty as this, it’s just begging to be made into decorations. We had so much fun making gingerbread houses over the holidays that we decided we needed to make an Easter gingerbread house too, decorated with all of our favorite chocolates!

I confess, I find it deliciously therapeutic to decorate these things. And the delicious part is half the fun, because obviously you have to taste test your materials. Am I right?

Why Create an Easter Gingerbread House?

Part of the fun of creating an Easter gingerbread house is doing it together with family or friends! It makes a perfect spring DIY project to do with kids as well.

This colorful little house makes charming and unexpected decor, too, when placed on a table or countertop on display.

The Best Easter Candies for Decorating

Easter is the perfect time for decorating a gingerbread house because of all of the colorful candies you can find (in some really fun flavors, in case you like to sample the product!).

We used pastel colored M&M’S , Dove Silky Smooth Milk Chocolate Eggs, Minis Mix Chocolates for Spring, and M&M’S Vanilla Cupcake.

Other great additions could be gummies in pastel colors, jelly beans, and robin eggs.

You can find a great selection by just heading to your local Target or similar shop and hitting the spring or Easter section.

How to Customize your Easter Gingerbread House

As you’re building your Easter gingerbread house, think of some fun ways you could customize it!

We added a little chocolate walkway and some candy shrubs outside. It’s also nice to have some construction paper or cardstock on hand to create shapes like our door or tree.

These little extra touches really give your gingerbread house that extra charming touch.

Gingerbread Alternatives So You Don’t Have to Bake

I knew I’d want to create an Easter gingerbread house, so around Christmas a purchased an extra gingerbread house kit and kept it.

You can also find them on the off-season (here’s one), but they’re a bit more expensive than usual.

Another great gingerbread substitute is to use graham crackers! You can patch them together to create walls and the roof, and use frosting to hold them together. It’s a quick and easy substitute.

If you’re wanting to bake your own, we’ve got an amazing gingerbread recipe right here that’s perfect for houses.

How to Construct an Easter Gingerbread House

Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus 1 Hour If You’re Baking)

  1. Put together your gingerbread house walls and roof from  your kit. Build your house on your platter or tray.
  2. While your house sets, slice a few Mini Snickers bars to create “bricks” for a walkway. Set these aside.
  3. Use card stock to create a door and a treetop. Cut out the shapes with scissors. If desired, cut small pieces of your gold stickers to create a doorknob and a mail slot.
  4. Start laying the chocolate bricks to form a walkway from the area where the door will be, leading toward the edge of your tray. The Snickers will stick by themselves. Line the walkway with chocolates; place a small dab of the frosting from your gingerbread house kit on the bottom of each Egg to keep it in place.
  5. Decorate the roof of your house. We chose a rainbow pattern, but be creative! Place a small dot of frosting on each M&M and stick it to the roof until your design is finished.
  6. Add the tree and door to your house. On the back of each, cover a 1″ square area with double-stick tape. Then place a dot of frosting on the tape. The tape will keep the frosting from making a greasy spot on your paper. Press the door onto the house and the treetop onto a mini Twix bar. Place a dot of frosting on the bottom of the Twix bar to get it to stand up like a tree.
  7. Add any other details that you like! Stack a few M&M’s to make a small topiary, spread some green ones around the sides of the house like grass, or add windows and other decorations to the walls.

display Ideas

It’s a great idea to create your Easter gingerbread house on a tray or platter of some sort that’s easily portable so that you can move it around your home. Then you can place it on display wherever you like.

The gingerbread house would look adorable as a centerpiece on an Easter table, on a countertop, or nestled among some flowers on display.

And it looks even better with a few little bowls of candy around it so you can grab a sweet snack as you pass by.
