With our second nugget on the way, we decided that it was only fair if the older brother got the bigger bedroom. So we moved Hank and all of his worldly possessions one door down in our hallway. He loves his new room, and it’s interesting because he plays in there way more than he used to in his old room! I think his stuff just fits better. When we moved we wanted to take his famous closet doors with him (Ryan spent way too long on those babies to just give them up). We wanted to paint a wall in his new room, too, and thought it might be fun to do a little take on the diagonal closet stripes. So we dove in and painted a diagonal wall!
We teamed with HGTV HOMETM by Sherwin-Williams to scout out the perfect paint color from one of their 16 new designer-inspired Color Collections. We settled on Tame Teal (HGSW1317) from the Fashion Forward Color Collection — I think we naturally gravitated toward it because that particular Color Collection contains lots of the shades that are already in his room, so we knew it would be a good fit . Pretty handy! The paint is now available at Lowe’s, which was super convenient for us. We wanted quality brushes to use with our new paint, so we grabbed some Purdy tools while we were there and got to it!
Materials
- HGTV HOMETM by Sherwin-Williams Tame Teal (HGSW1317), Showcase Interior Paint, eggshell finish
- Purdy® ClearCut™ Elite™ Glide™ Brush (for cutting in)
- Purdy Golden Eagle™ Roller on the Revolution Frame
- Painters tape
- Dropcloth
- Painters tray
Make Time: 2 Hours (Plus Drying Time)
Step 1: Start by taping off your diagonal line. Be sure the tape doesn’t arch at all as you’re adhering it to the wall. Smooth down the edges of the tape so that no paint will seep underneath. Cover the floor with a drop cloth.
Step 2: Grab your Purdy brush and start cutting in edges. The angled brush was crucial for this part — it was nice and sharp and made clean lines so that we didn’t need to mask the edges at all.
Step 3: Once you’ve cut in all of your corners and edges, grab your Purdy Revolution Roller. Load with paint and start painting in the large open areas of the wall. I like to paint in a “W” pattern when using a roller so that the edges of the paint blend into each other. The roller holds more paint than average, which helped lots in moving the project along quickly.
Step 4: Cover your whole wall with paint and allow the first coat to dry. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to complete your coverage.
Step 5: Carefully remove your painter’s tape.
Ta-daaaaa! I love this wall. Makes me wish I had had the courage to paint a diagonal accent wall a long time ago! (It also kind of makes me jealous that it’s not in my own room.) The paint went on like a dream, and we only had to use two coats for complete coverage, thanks to the Paint & Primer in One feature. Perfect for a morning project while Hank was away at pre-school. He came home pretty pumped to see his new room.
So what room would you paint if you had to choose?! I love this game. I’m still dreaming of a blush pink room somewhere in the house but I’ll have to convince Ryan of that one first.
Hope you try one of the new colors on your next painting project! If you do, be sure to leave a review of your paint experience here to spread the good word. And if you need help choosing brushes or tools, click here to use Purdy’s handy Tool Selector. xoxo

Hello! What a happy looking color!
Where is the “Henry” pennant from?
Thanks!
Hi Selene! It’s actually a DIY that we did on the blog ? You can find it here ? https://lovelyindeed.com/diy-no-sew-felt-name-pennant
I love it! I have a couple diagonals in the store and they are HUGE so getting the tape right took 2 sets of hands and a lot of adjusting but I LOVE how it came out. And peeling the tape off when you’re done is SO satisfying isn’t it?
YAY for diagonal walls — your store is the cutest! and yes, it’s soooo satisfying to peel off the tape to reveal the end result!
Love this! I planned to paint a diagonal chalk board wall in the twins room and Jason isn’t a fan of the idea. Maybe if I show him this room! ?
Chalkboard?! Love that idea! Hope it works out for you and your little ones. ?
Love this so much! Turned out so well! <3
