Have I told you guys that my sister is going to have a little boy?! We are all so excited, despite having approximately zero experience with boys — our family tends to have lots of girls. So I decided to make the little fella some new duds that are nice and manly. The template is a free download, so get yours here! Here’s what else you’ll need.

Materials

  • downloadable template
  • blank cardstock
  • tape
  • blank onesies
  • printer or Silhouette machine
  • freezer paper
  • scissors
  • X-Acto knife
  • fabric paint
  • sponge brush
  • iron
  • tweezers

Make Time: 2 hours

Print and cut out the template. If you have a Silhouette machine, just open the file in Silhouette, trace the images, and cut out. If not, print out the template on freezer paper by taping the paper to a piece of cardstock, matte side up. Then cut the template out of the freezer paper.

Iron the paper shiny side down onto the onesies. Each image has a little different orientation on the fabric, so make sure it’s where you want it to be before you iron it. And yes, the part where you have to iron down those tiny letters is a real bummer. But the payoff is worth it.

Gently paint over the stencils using a foam brush. Be careful not to overload with paint; a few thin coats is the way to go. (My black only needed one coat and my white needed three.) Also take care not to dislodge the freezer paper by painting too hard.

Once the paint is dry, use tweezers to remove all of the pieces of freezer paper. Use a small paintbrush for any necessary touchups. Wash according to the directions on both your onesies and the fabric paint.

I seriously can’t wait until there’s a baby inside of these! Also, what should my sister name her kiddo? Any good boy names out there? xoxo

  1. What a simple and cute idea! I’ll have to make some of these. It would be really easy to make something similar for a girl. Oh the possibilities! Seems like everyone is pregnant lately, so this is the perfect DIY. Thanks!

  2. I actually giggled out loud when I saw these. They are SO DARN CUTE!! My sister-in-law is about to have their first boy, after a string of four girls. We’re so excited to add a little boy to the mix, as our family is dominantly girls as well. Thanks for sharing this DIY – I’m in love 🙂 xoxo! eliza

  3. We can’t wait to use them! They are super cute. And I have washed them once (as every good mama will do before any clothes hit the baby skin) and they came out perfectly. 🙂

  4. aw what a cute idea! congrats to your sister! she should check out nameberry.com if she hasn’t already…it’s a neat site!

  5. LOVE THIS! Cute baby boy clothes can be difficult to come by. Unless, of course, you’re okay with cartoon animals and “Mommy’s Angel” written all over. Yuck. Our 4 month old baby boy is named Sawyer. I’m bias but I think that’s a pretty great name. Have fun with your soon-to-be new nephew!

  6. These are deliciously clever! Excellent work!

  11. Where did you get those onesies? I’m having such a hard time finding solid colored onesies and I would rather not dye my own.
